Charter fails to deliver 65-inch HDTV to contest winner, sends 19-inch box instead
We're tempted to chalk this one up to miscommunication, but something just reeks of wrongdoing. As the story goes, one particular winner of a Charter Father's Day contest was promised a 65-inch HDTV as well as free Charter services for an entire year. The only requirement was to pay sales tax on the winnings -- fair enough, right? After receiving a phone call and email confirmation from the carrier, the winning dad sat down with his jubilant daughter and unsuccessfully tried to fax in his W-9. Afterwards, he decided to mail it in, and after a bit of rigmarole, a Charter associate contacted him with news that it couldn't deliver the promised set; instead, it would "try" to get him a 42-incher, though a 19-inch TV was likely in his future. After a few more days of nothing, a box arrived at his door "large enough to hold a 19-inch television," which the "winner" promptly refused. Can't make this stuff up, folks.

NOTHING surprises me these days with these cable companies...i would of still accepted the 19" though...
HD4Eva @ Jul 3rd 2008 11:58PM
Except for the fact that charter probably would have reported a 65" to the IRS thus making him responsible for a few hundred in taxes...
Michael @ Jul 4th 2008 10:01AM
i really dont think taxes are based on the size of your tv there based on the money u make and spend
scjessey @ Jul 3rd 2008 1:42PM
19 inches isn't even 65 centimeters, so these assholes can't even blame it on a units mix up.
J.Goodwin @ Jul 3rd 2008 1:42PM
Verizon was giving away 19" HDTVs for all new FIOS subscribers here recently...
David Hildreth @ Jul 3rd 2008 2:13PM
That's just terrible, did they really expect no one to find out?
_JK_ @ Jul 3rd 2008 2:17PM
Good ole' Charter... *stab* *stab* *stab*
Man, I hate Charter.
xcrunk @ Jul 3rd 2008 3:53PM
Charter Communications blows a dead moose.
They are horrible. Compared to FiOS, they don't compare.
The minute FiOS is near, I'm gone!
fadetoblack51 @ Jul 3rd 2008 5:33PM
I changed to Directv almost a year ago and don't regret it a bit. More HD, better service, and big ten/nfl network. Charter is a joke.

Firtch @ Jul 3rd 2008 3:11PM
Oh man, that chaps my hide. I'm glad they've got the press on their side. They should call the local TV station, too.
What fucknuts.
DeadPlasmaCell @ Jul 3rd 2008 3:20PM
Damn, I'm just surprised someone actually wins in these things.. What stops these companies from holding these contests and never actually choose a real winner?? Who would know?
sr1329 @ Jul 3rd 2008 3:38PM
I know. After hearing news like this I guess big companies can do anything they well please.
Paul @ Jul 3rd 2008 3:27PM
give the man his winnings

I believe this may be the Marketing Manager from Charter's (Who called to promise the 65 incher) Myspace page:

Very sneaky. The sales tax on a 65 inch TV in Alabama (State tax is 4% and local towns also charge similar rates) could actually be more than the total cost of a 19 inch TV. Watch -- Charter will charge him for the sales tax on the bigger TV (and put it on his monthly bill) but refuse to give him anything but the tiny TV. That way they make money on each winner.
randyman @ Jul 3rd 2008 5:14PM
This story cheezed me off so much I tried to get in touch with their PR department. The number they gave me is 920.960.4054, where I left a message for "John" (forgot last name).
Why not drop a dime, and give 'em a call - when they figure out the extent of the reaming they're getting online, the "lucky winner" may actually stand a chance of getting satisfaction.
mcss1985 @ Jul 3rd 2008 5:26PM
for so strange reason engadget's horrible forums would not let me rpley to the one person I wanted to. Everyone else had a reply button, but not xcrunk.
So this message is for xcrunk:
you say that "the minute FIOS is close you are gone", I assume you mean from Charter. So have you had FIOS before in a different area? Because if not, how can you say "They are horrible. Compared to FiOS, they don't compare." if you have never had FIOS.
I realize everyone has opinions (obviously you can tell from my tone that my opinion of FIOS is full of four letter words), but if you haven't used both services don't compare the two.
Like I said you may have had FIOS previously in a different area, and then fine you are entitled to you opinion.
My main point is be careful what you ask for and the grass isn't always greener (especially when it comes to FIOS)
J.Goodwin @ Jul 3rd 2008 6:24PM
My experience to date has been that FIOS's grass is considerably greener than Comcast, DirecTV, and Dish Network, with the exception of HD, which wasn't available to me when I had the other providers, but clearly seems to be less voluminous at least so far.
I'm keeping my fingers crossed that they'll make good on their end of year promises for having all major HD networks online, but I'm not holding my breath. Then again, I wasn't holding my breath for DirecTV to finally realize that indeed I did have LOS for DirecTV from my new apartment building (judging by the DirecTV dish on the back of it), I just switched instead.
To each their own.
007craft @ Jul 4th 2008 12:16AM
must suck to live in america. When we win stuff here in canada, we dont pay a dime. Its all tax free.
Then again who am I to brag, its not like I actually win anything :(. But at least I know if I do, I actually win it and its free (which is good because I have no money :p)
Dave B @ Jul 4th 2008 12:20AM
Maybe the cable company realised that they could not fit a larger screen into the trailer parked at the trailer park?
C Martin @ Jul 4th 2008 9:44AM
Uh.. while this is an interesting story and all, should Engadget be commenting about it? I'm still waiting to here who won the Trick out My Entertainment Center contest from what, last year?

But as far as this story goes, I feel for the dad. I had a fight with Bestbuy several years ago on one of their Father's Day Contests.
http://troglodad.blogspot.com/2008_07_01_archive.html
My advice to the 19" Dad- don't give up. Keep pressuring them to hold true to their contest. I did, and got a $560 gift card out of it.
xdreamwalker @ Jul 4th 2008 12:54PM
Engadget did announce a winner: On Apr 10th, Samuel Goldstein won

Why would he want to sue the layers here?

The company I work for gave away door prizes at its Xmas party last year w/a 36" HDTV being the biggy. Everyone who won something found the item prices lumped into their next paychecks with friendly reminders about making sure they pay their taxes! first time the company has ever done this. The layoffs and constant limbo between contracts is one thing but jeesh how friggin cheap can you be?
Pingmeister @ Jul 5th 2008 5:11PM
Charter is our only cable choice where I live. When we decided to get into HDTV we checked online to see what they offer. Their website said service was not available in our area (we have been Charter customers for 6 years).
When we called on the phone they said we have NINE HD channels to choose from. THIS WAS JUST A FEW WEEKS AGO!
NINE CHANNELS!
So we went with DirecTV and now have 40+.
