Mvix's MX-780HD wireless HD media streamer gets reviewed
If you've been putting off that impending HD media streamer purchase, you may have waited just long enough to find the one you'll be picking up "next week." Mvix's MX-780HD wireless HD media streamer was recently reviewed over at TweakTown, and aside from a few minor gripes, critics were overwhelmingly pleased with its performance. So much, in fact, that they stated the unit could actually take the place of a dedicated HTPC. All in all, the only thing really holding this format-lovin', HDMI-packin' device from approaching media streaming stardom is the relatively lofty price tag ($320), but if that figure is well within your budget, it seems the MX-780HD is a pretty safe bet.

The unit cannot "actually take the place of a dedicated HTPC", since it does not support mkv container.

Why wouldn't they support mkv? That's the most important feature for a HD media player, since that's the best and most versatile format. How very disappointing.
On that point alone, this unit cannot stack up to the far cheaper Popcorn Hour. That unit plays every possible format.

I bought one of these about 2 years ago. While all the hardware specs basically made this a must have item, the software on it was horrible. I bought it specifically because it said it could play back native HD/TS files. Unfortunately it could not. Be it playback via the 10/100 network or locally, my older Xbox running XBMC actually did a far better job at playing HD files, even tho its CPU (Celeron 733mhz) was too slow to handle full framerates (it could playback at 5-10 fps).
I spent a day with it before returning it for a refund. The software on this thing is pure crap. I'm currently running XBMC on Windows and its FAR better.
Dont get me wrong, I like the design and the hardware on the mvix system, its just that it didnt live up to the HD playback promise.

It is hard for me to trust a reviewers assesment of HD video quality if he is using a 37inch LCD as his display device.

Newegg has the MX-780HD for $289.99 if you are interested.

After actually reading this vanila article, it should be noted that the reviewer basically gave this HD device a passing grade based on the playback performance of an sub-SD file. WTF is it that hard to find legal 720p demo files on the net? He has no problem finding TV Rips of Andromeda Strain. This system is all about HD, if you dont actually test HD playback, then the review is a total waste of time.
Based on my horrible experience playing HD .Transport Files (captured from my clear QAM card), I am not convinced that this device will actually play back HD content and not choke. Show me a review that actually tests 720p or 1080i content.

i got this Mvix to play my HD TivoDesktop rips. The MPEG2 files looked inferior when compared to playback through my PC (the PC was hooked up to the same TV so it's an apt comparison). It made HD content look like a regular DVD. Also, the AC3 audio wouldn't play. Maybe the tracks from TivoDesktop are corrupt, but they play on every media player on my PC - but no sound on the Mvix. Viewing pictures is a joke. You can't get full resolution on hi-res pics. And you can't use tag information in your mp3's. You can only browse by file name.
Nice idea, but needs better codecs and a better GUI

Yes I own this unit now for 9 mths and love it it streams HD video perfectly with the wireless from 4 rooms away, yes 1080, how u convert the MKV to iso then it sees it and plays fine, I hate the fact it doesnt play MKV and H2.64 as stand alone containers, but converted to iso it does great. the new firmware lets u have full control over the pictures and MP3 tagging and all that stuff for you Music lovers,
I have the Terabyte seagate 32mbcache hd in the unit for xtra storage, runs cool and NP at all with it. it connects wirelessly to the PCs in the house and streams anything at all I have on any of the computers to the TV.
the MviX 800 will have MKV and H2.64 support in the new chipset.
firmware upgrade work smoothly with this unit, overall I give it a 8.5, it would get a 10 if it played MKV and H2.64 by itself as that is what I mainly purchased it for
