The Godfather Collection hitting Blu-ray on September 23rd
Catching The Godfather on HD VOD is one thing; catching the famed trilogy on remastered Blu-ray is another. On September 23rd, Paramount will (re)release what's sure to be a holiday favorite in The Godfather: The Coppola Restoration. The package will be available in both DVD ($72.99) and Blu-ray ($119.99) formats, and videophiles will be elated to know that director Francis Ford Coppola oversaw the restoration process himself. The four-disc BD set will be presented in 1080p with Dolby TrueHD, and extras junkies should find plenty to love as well. For a rundown of what to expect on each disc, check out the read link below.

This is great news for movies fans. THough I don't think this will suddenly move BD units, it's still great to know we can get these great films in the best resolution and PQ available.
Now, if they wanna start to seriously move BD players? Get STAR WARS and LOTR out on BD and see how fast those titles get BD players in homes... especially if they're released during the holidays.
... I'm not holding my breath though.

I am grinning from ear to ear after reading this. Guaranteed buy for me no matter what the price.
DrXym @ Jun 30th 2008 12:51PM
What the hell is with the price? The remastered DVD edition is already out in in Europe and available on Play.com for £17.99 or €25.49 right now. That's approximately $32 which includes the 17.5-20% VAT.
I hope it gets some deep discounting (at least 40%) in the US because an MSRP of $72.99 or $119.99 is a lot.
Devils Advocate @ Jun 30th 2008 1:13PM
The DVD version will no doubt be on sale when its released.
The bluray will probably sell for full MSRP at places like Best Buy or Circuit City.
Amazon will once again be the best deal....

What a stupid thing to do. Blu-ray will regret releasing it.

The Godfather on Blu-ray. That is great news. More HD content is always good news and the first two were great movies.

This is an awesome release for the format! I'll definitely be picking it up, and I hope they keep all of the classics coming in high def. I actually haven't owned a copy of the Godfather trilogy since the LaserDisc days, so since I've avoided all the interim "dips", I'm not so upset about the price this time around.
Based on history, Amazon should have this up for preorder for around $83.99. Based on how high-profile a title it is, I wouldn't be surprised if they upped the discount to 40 or even 50% off MSRP, which would make it $71.99 or $59.99 respectively.

I can't believe they have all these features for movies that are already 3.5 hours long. Jesus h christ..i really liked the first one, and i've had the full trilogy for more than a year...but its kinda hard to shell out 3.5 hours to watch a movie. Hopefully i'll be able to watch the last 2 before 2009 hits
andrewgreene @ Jun 30th 2008 3:14PM
I wonder if it's the same commentary from the DVD release - which was one of the best commentaries I've ever heard. And look at all of those HD extras. This is going to be a real treat.
Mr_Fizzlepop @ Jun 30th 2008 4:48PM
Netflix renting made it easier to only buy the cream of the crop that I'd watch over and over and rent the rest, cutting down adding to my library in the last few years so I don't even own this baby on any format.(having just about every friend owning helped too.)
This will be an easy sale for me.

I'm thrilled to see this release on Blu-ray but I will rent it or at least wait for the reviews before plunking down my money.
The last Godfather trilogy box set "restoration" from the early 2000's looked horrible. It was dark and extremely grainy and sounded like the audio was recorded in a can. Maybe with Coppola's name slapped across the front of the box this will finally be the real restoration the films deserve.
I'll bet Amazon will have it for 75-85 dollars.
Mike @ Jun 30th 2008 7:08PM
Terrific article about the restoration :

Godfather III never looked so good!
Seriously.
Mr. E @ Jul 1st 2008 4:33PM
It's up now for preorder on Amazon: $86.95. They are showing an MSRP of $124.99, not $119.99.
