Samsung to break ground on yet another LCD plant
Hey, someone has to take care of Planet Earth's insatiable appetite for LCD, right? Samsung is once again looking to expand its LCD manufacturing operations in China, this time by investing around $500 million to erect a new facility for cranking out the seemingly successful 82-inch panel (among others). Reportedly, the plant will eventually be used to pump out 40-, 46-, 57-, 70- and 82-inch LCD panels in order to "satisfy the robust market requirement," but there's no word given on how soon product will start to ship from its doors.

FINALLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
We have been stuck with 52" panels for a long time, and nothing bigger (less the exotic stuff, which starts at 65" and 70")
There used to be lots of 57" models, but those seemed to vanish.
I sell this stuff and there is a obvious and gaping hole at the 57" size. I would even like to see something between 57" and 70", maybe a 63".
If that 70" could be sold for something reasonable like $10-12k, it would sell. Even if the 82" was $30k, it would sell (as consumer goods).

That's not a bad idea. I think LCD sales will only go up for the next little while as hdtv adoption becomes more apparent and people replace more of their older crt tv's with larger flatscreen tvs. I find that the illusion of thinness seems to encouage consumers to buy larger size tvs.

So what's the chance that Samsung keeps making DLPs come next year? I'm thinking zilch, but if others can offer any reason Samsung would stick it out with Mitsubishi, I'd like to hear them. Personally, I'm more inclined to get an LED-based DLP.

they should have the 72 inch dlp led model next year. I would wait for ces in january 09. this year they improved the led its brighter, but next year should be better because they did show off a prototype dlp led set at 67 inches with 500,000 to 1 contrast ratio and 240hz

I'd love to have a 70" screen. I noticed that 52" size seems to be the standard large size LCD screen from most Vendors. 52" is isn't big enough if you have had a 57" or a 60" TV in the past.
