Cisco set-top-boxes to solve U-verse audio dropouts?
Looks like one of those "souped-up" set-top-boxes could be just what the doctor ordered for ailing U-verse users. It's no secret (not even to AT&T) that many customers have been experiencing intermittent audio dropouts using optical audio connections on the current Motorola STBs. Typically, the glitches occur every 30 seconds to a minute, and the problem seems to reside within the box itself. Reportedly, Tier 2 technical support has advised some subscribers that Cisco boxes are now being dispatched for those dealing with the issue, and of course, AT&T asserts that these units will solve the problem. The latest word on end-user availability is "within [a few] weeks," so hopefully a bona fide fix isn't too far out.

AT&T is garbage. They're the NSA's best friend, they want to cap your bandwidth usage, they're against Net Neutrality, they'll happily cooperate with the RIAA and they have a monopoly on the iPhone.
Screw you AT&T.

These boxes are being used in new installations. They are much smaller than the motorola boxes. The non DVR is so small.

Total Home DVR aka Whole Home DVR is just around the corner for U-verse subscribers. This service can allow you to watch or record shows on another box.
If you don't have 2HD/2SD then call the u-verse number and request it since 2HD/2SD is being rolled out. It will require a phone call and a box reboot but it's worth it.

The audio drop outs used to happen to me on Comcast using OnDemand on the original Motorola HD DVRs. I got it repaced with the newer ones with the HDMI port instead of the DVI ones, and the audio works fine over Toslink now.

I have the new cisco box and I have the audio dropouts with my optical output. The tech told me that it was due to the HDMI cables and told me to use the component cables. I tried that and I still have the dropouts.

I spoke with tier 2 today and requested a CISCO box and they told me that they were using the CISCO boxes only on a trial basis in some areas to see if it fixed the problem. If so they said it would go into wide useage.

I gave the new cisco DVR from comcast ,running HDMI
When i change channels and get into the HD channels teh audio goes out and teh picture will get green lines through it.
Sometimes the only way to solve teh issue is to power off the unit.
This is very frustrating
