(I got the files from using both camcorders in the store.) Each of the raw footage was set at 1080p30 and I was using Cyberlink's PowerDVD to produce the clips. The Samsung clip took 51 seconds to render and the Canon clip took 34 seconds to render. So in this case, the Canon files were about 1.5X faster to produce.

I then created 2 more slightly longer clips: 1 minute and 5 seconds each. The Samsung clip took 2 minutes and 6 seconds to render. The Canon clip took 2 minutes and 1 seconds. This time both took nearly the identical amount of time to render.

So from my tests, I had no trouble editing either file format and it seems like Canon is slightly faster to render but not by very much. From my limited exposure to the file formats, I think I'd prefer Samsung's MP4 file format since it seems like it can play back with more ease, as Eugenia even admitted. I was really looking forward to this one, but I found the stabilization feature to be terrible. This is a very light camera and it will shake if you're trying to hold it steady, and the software stabilization does not seem good enough to compensate. I compared it to a few others and found the Canon SD-card camera (i forget the model number) to have much better stabilization. However, that one shoots only 1080i. Also, when shooting 1080p (30fps), this camera's LCD is very choppy. Not so when you switch it to 1080i. It seems that Samsung's HMX20C is more resonable than HDR-SR12. HMX20C is much cheaper (half price), lighter, good design and has similar functionalities. HMX20C has 8GB internal memroy which would be OK for 1hour recording while SR12 has 120GB/60GB of hard disk which would be OK but too expensive. I bought this camera at Circuit City on June 18 for $289.19, including tax, in Orlando, FL.

I first noticed the in-store sale at a Daytona Beach CC, but they were out of stock. The sales person told me he didn't have any idea why the camera was so heavily discounted, but he bought one himself. I offered to buy the display model but he said he couldn't sell display units for products that were current and offered to order one for me.

Instead, we confirmed one was available in Orlando so I made the journey and scored. I don't know if this was a mistake in pricing or a marketing test or what ... but the CC web site apparently did not display the sale price and I have no idea if its still happening or if it was restricted to that region of Florida.

Anyway ... so far I think its a sweet camera (at a sweeter price!). For what its worth, I am a pro shooter and bought one mainly to stick in a pocket of my still camera bag for quick video grab shots. I'll be taking some scenes into the edit suite this week to see how they stack up. FYI, the tilt down handle config makes for killer ground level shots!

filmshooter

Comments on

I just bought the Canon HF100 because IMHO it was a better buy than this Samsung camcorder, despite the fact that this Samsung camcorder has better playback of its MP4 file format.

But I definitely would have snatched the camcorder if it was priced so low like you found it. After playing with it for hours, i can tell you that to me its nothing but a glorified WEBCAM class camera. IT SUCKS!!!!!!!. The 6.4 million CMOS sensor has lot of noise in low light (reasonable indoor conditions). More than usual in my opinion. There is a kind of smearing effect which you get. I dont know if its the mepg AVC codec or the sensor. Also i get a blur when a shot has pan in it. The images are just not crisp instead are somewhat dull. The LCD display shows false results when it comes to scene exposure or shutter speed (the sene looks really bright on it but when you play it back on your TV or PC its actually darker. Samsung lacks the sophistication of making a consumer high def camcorder. They can learn a thing or two from canon, jvc and sony, as they have been in this business longer than samsung. I even had a long chat with the tech support level2 guys and they cant fig it out. This camera needs a serious firm update or something. A 5 out of 10 rating.

syed

Comments on

The apparent jerkiness of these video clips does not appear to be due to poor image stabilization, but rather the selection of 1080p as the record mode. Remember, when you see 1080p advertized as a display capability they are saying the device can display 60 progressive 1080 frames per second; many newer TVs can actually display 120 progressive 1080 frames per second. This camera can only record 30 1080 progressive frames per second, thus the jerky quality of the footage.

Could you post a sample of 1080i recorded video from this camera?
