The Blu-ray fans at Hollywood in High Def took their videocams with them to a Disney
Sleeping Beauty event and have come back with a nice preview video of the BD-Live
features planned for the title. The
Disney BD-Live Network demo highlights Movie Chat instant messaging, Movie Mail for sharing video content and online interactive gaming that can be used to collect Disney Reward points. It's pretty good-looking stuff, and definitely leaves us with a better impression than, say,
Yakuza Fighter. The Movie Mail demo came off as a little creepy to us, but that has to do with the content rather than the tech. The big question is, how many profile 2.0 players (besides the PS3) will be on the market when the title ships on October 7? The marketing folks from Disney had something to say about that -- hit the video after the jump to check it out.

Wow that guy is creepy lol
Achilles @ Jun 12th 2008 11:51AM
uhh.... ok?
aaron @ Jun 12th 2008 12:01PM
looks as lame as it did when hd-dvd tried it the same stuff.... id much rather they focus on removing all those trailers at the beginning of their films (man national treasure 2 was bad and i have a horrible feeling it was just the beginning).
DEEZNUTZ @ Jun 12th 2008 12:08PM
Agreed. Though I don't mind the idea of being able to see new trailers whenver I watch a BD live disc, so long as I choose to see them and they aren't being forced on me.
Up front trailers suck major balls. They really need to stop disabling the menu button and allow folks to get on with the movie if they so choose it.
MadMike @ Jun 12th 2008 12:17PM
Easy, get a Blu-Ray burner for the PC. Install AnyDVD HD, tell it to strip the trailers and ads and go directly to the main menu. Burn new Blu-Ray.
Or just rip the movie, stream it to the PS3 and forget about the other crap. Because it's all crap anyways.
All the extra features are in SD anyway. F*cking worthless.
DEEZNUTZ @ Jun 12th 2008 1:06PM
@ Mad Mike,
Either you have a warped definition for "easy", or just being funny. That's WAY too much trouble to go through just to remove trailers.
Rob @ Jun 12th 2008 12:23PM
Why do studios think that people want all this crap? People are interested in watching the movie in the highest quality possible/available. Maybe I'm in the minority here. But, I really don't care what others think about a movie I'm watching. All this silly stuff of BD-Live is just another marketing tool for the studios to bombard us with bs we could do fine without. Maybe studios should release two versions of the same movie; one without the trailers and ads, and another with all the junk they want to include but for a much cheaper prices since the movie has become one huge infomercial.
Fredster @ Jun 12th 2008 3:08PM
Yeah, i agree with you man! Just please bring us the best picture and best sound and trailers so that we can decide to watch them if we want. And what's the point with HD if all the extras are SD?? WTF? Now fix this so that the ridiculous prices of BD can finally be justified(?)
A1 @ Jun 12th 2008 5:38PM
Rob i'm kinda with you but you got to remember, its all about the kids.
My 8 year old will love sending messages to her mates watching the same movie and she loves all the trivia on the DVD versions now, so all of this will be awesome for her.
I don't think BD live will have much of an adult fan base but for 6-14 year olds it will be great.
One thing though, how will they stop f**king weirdos from trying to send stuff? Thats my only concern, i hope to god they police this right.
DrXym @ Jun 13th 2008 7:25AM
I doubt sending messages via a remote will be much fun, but I agree that BD-Live has its best chance with kids. That's why I think Disney are the right people to embrace it. However they have to really give something back to the user. Silly gimmicks or generic portals won't do it. Build out an entire BD-Live experience, even with something akin to Club Penguin and they could have a hit on their hands.

The video overlay is actually kind of interesting. I can see that perhaps having educational use for online film classes.
UnnDunn @ Jun 12th 2008 12:33PM
I must admit, that is pretty durned cool.
JimC @ Jun 12th 2008 12:44PM
This BD-Live crap is a direct result of the feature war that was necessary because of HD-DVD hype. I wonder how long of release delays these stupid features cause?
joe @ Jun 12th 2008 12:55PM
This was a bad idea for HD-dvd and this is a bad idea for BD.
How long will the servers stay up? What happens to the features when the internet is unavailable.
It's a Disney movie so will Disney be monitoring for inappropriate chat?
EQC @ Jun 12th 2008 12:58PM
Oh boy! A new way to get ring tones and wallpapers!
On the other hand, that computer animated Tinkerbell (and all her fairy friends) are hot. Yeah, I said it.
JayD-1K @ Jun 12th 2008 8:22PM
i think this could be a good way to bring geo seperated familys and friends together! think about.....you're away from your family, a new movie comes out that your lil girl/boy realy wants to watch but he wants to watch it with you!
your family is innnnnn....lets say OH and you're in JP! being able to share this moment with him/her would mean the the world to them! i know how that situation feels......being an Army brat and than being a Marine dad!
sometimes the things that YOU might find to be a lil stupid, others (like myself) may find them to be, a prety smart idea.
just something to think about
