Singulus sees Blu-ray being adopted quicker than DVD
Here's the background: Singulus Technologies manufactures machines for optical disc production. It's not a research firm, and it's hardly in a position to assert that Blu-ray adoption overall is occurring at a faster rate than DVD was in its infancy. That being said, a recent release from the outfit is still worth eying, as its CEO points out that "orders for Blu-ray in the first year of the dual-layer technology already by far exceeded the volume at the start of the DVD eleven years ago." Granted, this simply means that Singulus is picking up orders for its BD machines quicker than it secured 'em for DVD machines -- heck, maybe the sales team is just more adept nowadays. Either way, it's an interesting piece that sheds a smidgen of light onto the adoption debate, but it's a far cry from being a total industry perspective.

The very non-scientific rebuttal to this is that there are roughly 1 billion more people than there were 11yrs ago.

Singulus may not be a research firm, but at least their statements are based on an actual fact (number of Blu-ray replication orders) and not speculation/polls about future intent. That's pretty refreshing, actually. I'm pretty sick of all the speculation.
Most likely part of the increase they're seeing is due to the fact that Sony is pretty well tied up replicating PS3 game discs and doesn't have much extra capacity for movie production. This means the load is falling to other replication facilities, who are scrambling to bring BD manufacturing capacity online, and hence buying a lot of Singulus machines.
In any case, it's great to hear that the Blu-ray format is obviously growing in demand, regardless of what some people would maintain.

21 machines in a single quarter is impressive. If they ran peak non-stop, that's 300,000 discs a day. Output is obviously not going to be that high but its pretty clear that BD replication facilities are ramping up in a big way.

Its interesting news as it gives a bit of direction and its always nice to hear good things even if its not big news.

Wow, now this IS really shocking news.
Big Blu-ray manufacturer/backer (with a shed-load invested in the format) talks up the format.
