It plugged in and no configuration required, my 8300HD just all of a sudden had more free space (tripled my capacity versus the included 160GB). However, with the 8300HD receiver, I found it unstable to begin with.  Missed recording or recording would be broken into more than one piece.  Once I attached my own external drive, it became a lot more unstable with its recordings.
