Luminus Devices' PhlatLight technology gets detailed
Today, Samsung is the only TV maker with sets containing Luminus Devices' PhlatLight, but according to a new report detailing the technology, that could be a-changin'. We heard that this stuff was taking home some fancy award earlier this year, but now we're getting a real in-depth look at what all it can do to make our lives better. Aside from having the potential to last the entire lifetime of the TV (over 60,000 hours) and "deliver a consistent picture without fading," PhlatLight essentially "combines the benefits of both LED and laser technologies." There's plenty more on the technicalities waiting in the read link below, but those focused on end products will be delighted to know that this system is slated to arrive in front projectors and pocket projectors in the not-too-distant future.

I call BS, because why are the lamp based samsungs far better than the phatlight led ones ????? and the2008 mitsubishi lamp based ones are way better than either samsungs and not even talking about the diamond sets. this is nothing like the laser tech in the laservue. so if everythingelse blows these away wait til laservue comes out. granted laster tv will cost over $5,000-7,000 range for a 65-73 inch set. thats ok i will still consider buying one hell the sony sxrd set at 70 inches was around 6-7k itself

Just looking at that diagram gives the impression that unlike color wheel based DLP systems, the entire three-color latent image for each pixel can be achieved, and thus no temporal shifting to result in DLP rainbows.
If this is correct then it is good news. I wonder, though, how big the LED-portion of the overall light engine is. In other words, how big would a front projector have to be in order for it to be used in a projected image to screen scenario.

I have a Samsung HL-T5087S with this and I am very happy with it. I've only had it for nine months... so we'll have to see about the lifetime claims... only time will tell.
