The worth of it is debatable.

When I bought a Integra many moons ago (I think 2000), forget the model number, but it was near the top. They amps were upgraded, "better circuitry" (or so they claimed, more gold or something like that) and gold plated terminals to name some of the major ones.

I did end up returning it since I was having issues with humming, probably a ground loop problem. Ended up getting a marantz SR-8000 that I have been keeping my eye out for a pre/pro, which Onkyo has one and I think Pioneer. Would like to get a Anthem or something higher-end like that, but they just have joined the times with multiple HDMI connection or more importantly, all the new audio format.

zargon

Comments on Integra introduces DTR-5.9 A/V receiver

It probably has the audio section of the SR606 with the video portion of the 805 or something like that. He convinced his readers that every 100 watt amplifier, given the same specs, would sound the same. Identical. That if you couldn't measure it, it didn't exist.

This has been proven over and over to be a fallacy. Even though parts quality CAN make a difference to the end result, won't necessarily change the values when being measured. Parts ain't parts! There are many examples of "high end" amplifiers (as well as other electronics products) that don't have the stellar specs of their lower quality counterparts but still significantly outperform them. No question. Everybody agrees. Even the average layperson!

But since most HT magazines cover mainly an A/V receiver's features and processing (video & audio) capabilities, rather than it's pure sound quality connected to a resistive/inductive load (like a speaker), not as many readers are as up to speed on what to look for in regards to quality! And this really IS too bad. The days of the educated consumer has been replaced with folks who take advice (via blogs/reviews) from Internet savvy but not particularly qualified owners of A/V equipment and pseudo reviewers.

Some of these folks MAY HAVE spent the required time in a sound room, connecting, un-connecting, dis-assembling, re-connecting, re-positioning, ABX blind listening to piece after piece after piece ad-nauseam so they really have a handle on both the gross and subtle differences between these products, but I'll bet not many of them have.

Doc Wixson
