Blu-ray releases on June 3rd, 2008
This is the week that many have been waiting for. The week where Paramount finally opens the floodgates and officially releases all those titles on Blu that were previously available. The biggest Paramount release to make its HD debut is without a doubt There Will Be Blood (IMDB 8.5) followed by Cloverfield, but the rest are no slouch either. But while we wait until the end of July for the last previously Red studio to go Blu brining just about all of Hollywood together behind one format -- Fox, Warner, and MGM open the classics flood gates with some very famous titles like the Dirty Harry franchise and Patton. So while our total went up by 51 titles this week thanks to Paramount and others, there is still at least one good movie released exclusively on DVD this week in the way of Control (IMDB 8.0) thanks to Weinstein. Regardless of one missing title, we'd be surprised if there was any movie fan who couldn't find something to watch this week, so enjoy it until the next title drought.Blu-ray

Wow, the cover to "There Will Be Blood" is just awful. Lot's of war flicks this week for Father's Day. The Fox ones apparently got a lot better transfers than the MGM ones. A bit of a shame really since A Bridge Too Far has some really epic set pieces.

Cloverfield and There Will be Blood are instant purchases for me. I was sooo looking forward to these on HD DVD, until the whole thing came crumbling down and was forced to wait 3-4 months. :(
Now if only I could start getting some of Universal's films that have been getting neglected for the last 6 months...

cloverfield is one of the first blu ray titles to take advantage of a higher bitrate than hd dvd could do. its at 35 mbps, not the full potential of blu ray but far better than hd dvd could have done

No it's not. Nature's Journey shipped months ago with bitrates that peak in the high 30s. Equating bitrate to overall quality is a fool's paradise. I could toss all the bitrate I want at a crappy master it's not going to make a difference at all. Garbage in Gargage out. I'm not saying Cloverfield is garbage but rather bitrate will tell you nothing about a title without knowing the quality of the master.

I think we can take it that the Cloverfield master is going to be absolutely flawless. But whether films like Cloverfield & Transformers deserve all the lavish attention is another matter.

I bought Bee Movie on Blu-ray before Memorial Day at Walmart. I thought it was odd that it was already out but didn't think much to check on the actual release date...

The June 3rd date was the date that Amazon started shipping them. The movie was supposed to be out two weeks ago, but it wasn't available at Amazon or our local Best Buy, so we didn't list it.

"There Will Be Blood" is the only movie worth buying. Cloverfield is an up-to-date Gozilla movie. Very disappointed.
The rest are not worth buying on standard DVD, much less BRay.

I actually liked Cloverfield a lot, but it was quite polarizing. My wife summed it up well--if you thought it was about a monster, you were going to be disappointed. But if you want to see how "normal" everyday people deal with an inconceivable disaster, you'll enjoy it.

Patton absolutely is worth getting on Blu Ray. Just for the opening speech. The Longest Day is a classic too, as is Dirty Harry. I haven't seen any reviews for Dirty Harry but the other two have been very well received.

Yeah, that's true. Interesting the way the timing worked out, with the new-to-Blu-ray studios releasing their first BDs, and the final HD DVDs being released all at the same time.
Boy, who would have thought prior to CES that we would have all studios finally releasing in the same high-def format by this time? I'm just loving all these new releases. I even love the releases that I don't want to buy, because SOMEBODY out there wants them!

Even though I'm somewhat glad that we are getting more and more movies on BD, I still think that $20 for a older catalog title is pretty expensive. Cloverfield at $20 is DEAD on. They should offer all BD movies at that price and $15 for older titles is justified. Cloverfield pricing is definitely a good move.
Out of these though I'll probably get Cloverfield as I enjoyed the movie quite a bit and Mr. E's wife is 100% right. The movie is about people first, the monster is just an initiator of tragedy. It was never meant to compete with Godzilla IMO.
I think that there are really some gems here.
Dirty Harry is definitely a must for any movie lover. I'm curious how the transfer is. Bee movie is good family type movie and Cloverfield and There will be Blood are definitely good buys and good movies.
I'm curious to see how NPD numbers look like this week

while in a way i can agree about catalog titles, but realy not all should be cheap (many films they have to add extras like new documentaries and what not, also exra cost associated with transfer centers and studios need to make a profit) depending n when the movie was made it may have been unonized so some money goes to cast crew stunt people who are SAG, and then the directors and of course producers then the studio gets its cut. but pre union stuff , hel ya should be cheaper though in my book.
also wow amazed this was a positive post coming from ya.
but i wouldnt worry about the NPD yet. it may g up slightly or stay the same. give them a year and it wil surly increase as more people buy ps3 systems other bluray players on market today and fall. people buying hd sets. and nextyears cheaper chinese players (although i'm holding out for the mitsubishi 3d player with reald hardware, i wont bu a budget player right now, maybe when i get a 2nd hd set ya)
but even though bluray is selling better than dvd did vs vhs in the same timeframe, blu ray has one thing against it that dvd didn't . people need to buy new tvs and most people are still sd. give it time many people will upgrade when all stores sell are hd sets and they drop in price. in another year or 2 the numbers wil change, will they top dvd jst yet, maybe not, but in a few more years all catalog titles will prob be bluray only, with new release films going blu first then dvd and in some cases just blu.
remember dvd didn't beat vhs til towards the end, and thats mostly because studios were dropping support to give dvd the edge.

Here we go again, the bit-rate deluded kiddies strike again.
Looks children, watching the mbps meter on your PS3 (a ludicrous idea of ever there was) says nothing about the quality of the movie when modern codecs produce an excellent image within an 'optimum range' well within the max possible.
......and just for the fun of informing the (obviously) ignorant;
X-Men 3 peaked at 40mbps in 1 or 2 scenes.
I don't see any of you trying tp pretend that that was the "peak" in
movies.

It appears that all Blu-Ray players come with a $100 gift card at Wal-Mart during the big push. That includes:
- The $298 Magnavox 1.1 player
- The $348 Samsung 1500 1.1 player (which states that it is "BD Live" ready but this is under debate
- The $440 Panasonic BD 30 player
- The $380(?) Sony BDP300
