Transformers Blu-ray edition gets detailed, confirmed for September launch
Check it, Blu-ray fans. That totally believable rumor about Transformers finally fitting into a BD sleeve was indeed accurate, and now we're starting to see the nitty-gritty details about what we can expect come September 2nd. For starters, the Blu-ray edition will feature a 5.1 Dolby TrueHD track as well as a 5.1 PCM uncompressed track to complement the obligatory 1080p transfer. We're also told to expect a trailer for the BD release of Iron Man, BD-Live content and a lengthy list of supplemental material -- all of which is expected to be in beautiful high-def. Tap the read link for the full list of extras, and start saving that $39.99 (or so) right now.

Why is every movie 5.1? What was the point of me buying a 7.1 system again?
northcranky @ May 29th 2008 2:13PM
Your up-conversion receiver not performing well enough? Yeah, 5.1 eats dirt compared to 7.1 but thx ultra 2 cinema sounds great for 5.1 sources.
CJH @ May 29th 2008 2:25PM
Am I the only person alive who doesn't care about 7.1?
A good 5.1 system sounds good enough to me. I'd rather have more space for video bitrate.
The Fuzz 53 @ May 29th 2008 3:11PM
No, my receiver is great (Onkyo TX-SR705), I just feel like those two middle speakers on the back wall are sitting there and looking pretty as opposed to doing something. For anything that's plain old Dolby Digital, I keep it set to Doldy Digital EX, so at least something comes out of them.
Mr. E @ May 29th 2008 3:40PM
I honestly think 7.1 was a pretty unnecessary addition to the next-gen video specs. Movies are not mastered in 7.1 for theatrical release, so a 7.1 home theater release would require a complete rework of a soundtrack from the ground up. I suspect that's why we see so few of them, relatively.
I'm happy with 5.1, personally.
Achilles @ May 29th 2008 2:01PM
IT'S ABOUT TIME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Finally a release on Blu-Ray worth buying. COUNT ME IN!
Mojo_Yugen @ May 29th 2008 6:43PM
You must of mis-read something. It's TRANSFORMERS!
Achilles @ May 29th 2008 7:10PM
Nope, didn't misread it. It's audio and visual candy for your home system. This movie wasn't made to win Oscars. It's mere entertainment. Unclench my friend. It's going to be OK.
MasterCKO @ May 29th 2008 2:26PM
I hate being double-dipped, but for this (and LotR Trilogy), I don't care. The money has already been earmarked. Yeah HD.
Wes @ May 30th 2008 7:13AM
If you don't wait to wait, you could triple-dip. Its been playing on my hdtv movie channels (the non ppv ones) for 1.5 months now? and on the hdtv ppv channels for 3 months+.
Not to mention for the price of the blu-ray double dip, you could subscribe to a few movie channels for 2-3 months and watch plenty of other movies in semi-hd with 5.1 audio like this disc has.
MasterCKO @ May 31st 2008 1:56PM
and put up with comcast's annoying compression? No way, Jose. Not the same.
Andy @ May 29th 2008 2:29PM
All these movies with BOTH TrueHD and PCM annoy me. There is absolutely no reason. If there is room, then use ONLY PCM+Regular DD/DTS tracks. If there isn't, use ONLY TrueHD+Regular DD/DTS Tracks.
TrueHD and PCM tracks decode exactly the same. No reason for both.
The best idea would be DTS-HD:MA ONLY on every disc, that way, if one has a decoder, they can get the lossless track, otherwise they get the original core DTS track. (At a good 1.5mbps)

=====================================================
A Dolby Digital plus (DD+) track (also 1.5mbps) would be better.
Not that there is a lot wrong with a full sized DTS core @ 1.5mbps but I don't recall DTS saying about their DTS core what Dolby have said about DD+..
Check this if you haven't already - Dolby could easily just have said 'quality close to' or 'quality very near to', they didn't they actually said publicly 'transparent'.
http://cdn.libsyn.com/hdtvpodcast/HDTV-2007-11-02.mp3
24 minutes in.
Dolby said that, whilst DolbyTrue HD is bit-for-bit identical to the PCM master, DD+ should sound 'transparent to the original'
(eg. identical to our ears).
They said that the Transformers DD+ is soundtrack was possibly the best sounding high def disc at the time (which did include numerous Dolby True HD & uncompressed audio tracks).
* note to the PS3 game console f*ckwits
'Dolby Digital +' is not the same as the low-spec vanilla 'Dolby Digital' mandated by Blu-ray & found on so many Blu-ray releases.
Sean @ May 29th 2008 11:04PM
Bad. DTS-HD Master Audio as the only source is terrible idea. Because not everyone has the ability to decode DTS-HD Master Audio. PS3 barely got this feature.
LPCM is universal with HDMI audio. Everyone who has a AV Receiver that doesnt just do PASS THROUGH is good to go with PCM.
The studio is most likely encoding TrueHD as 24-Bit audio as it would take up less space then LPCM 24-Bit.
The PCM track is still uncompressed but only at 16-Bit (Just an estimation)
Paramount is doing it right by including a PCM track, TrueHD, and AC-3 track. Its beyond universal , and everyone will be able to get insane audio quality on day 1 of its release.
benny boy @ May 29th 2008 3:17PM
Truth Teller, why do you have to turn everything into insults trying to start flame wars?
Idiot.
looseinthedeuce @ May 29th 2008 3:35PM
DolbyTrueHD would also work if it were the only track on the disc, 'cause you'd either get DD from the coax audio or ultimately lossless through HDMI or 6 channel out.
On that note, DD+ as the only track doesn't make any sense since DolbyTrueHD is better and can still be converted to DD over coax.
The discs have plenty of room. I don't know why we're paying royalties to Dolby or DTS when the discs can just have LPCM as the only track. The players can even encode that to DD for those that want to use the coax audio.
Mr. E @ May 29th 2008 3:56PM
What the hell Truth Teller, when did you start being the Dolby pimp around here? Do you own stock in them or something?
I agree that DTS HD MA is the best bet right now for a single lossless soundtrack, with an old school DD track for backup (for the few people left who don't have DTS-capable receivers).
I personally hope all the crazy soundtrack combinations settle down at some point. It's going to be really annoying having to constantly override the default audio selection on all these different combos.
Shape @ May 29th 2008 4:59PM
The uncompressed LPCM soundtracks generally don't have as high a bit rate as the TrueHD and DTS HD-MA tracks. So, no, an uncompressed LPCM soundtrack probably won't sound as good as TrueHD or DTS-HD-MA compressed soundtracks.
1stGreg @ May 29th 2008 6:34PM
Uh, "Shape", you might want to know what you're talking about before posting that kind of nonsense.
PCM is the original soundMix -UNCOMPRESSED-
It therefore has a huge bitrate and takes a large amount of space on disc, but it is universally recognized by BR players and by recent receivers. This is the best you can get as far as sound format goes, but it takes, again, a lot of space. Not that it's a problem when you got 50Gb instead of 30 :)

benny boy:
My guess, it's because he's a sad and lonely person with little to no friends.
When he was young, he saw all the other kids playing ball, trading collectible cards or whatever it was that the kids in his neighborhood were into. He wan't to join in and play and at first the other kids were kind and welcoming, but soon they all started to shun him.
Young Truth Teller then started to question why no one wanted to be his friend and in his mind he came to two possible reasons. The first reason was that the world is populated by A-holes and idiots and the second reason was that he was an A-hole and an idiot.
Confronted with this horrible truth, young Truth Teller decided that he couldn't possibly be the A-hole as his mommy and grandma always told him what a bright and beautiful snowflake he was. So he decided that world was evil and cruel.
Now, in order to maintain his delusion, he needlessly provokes arguements. Hearing people disagree with him and call him names only serves to reinforce his dismal view of humanity.
In short, it helps him sleep at night.
lee @ May 29th 2008 3:45PM
What is so exciting about this? Another crappy Micheal Bay movie..., great just great. Bay is one of the worst directors of our time. Just terrible movies, everything he does looks like a coca-cola commercial. Bay just sucks and I don't know why people don't see that all he does is poor story telling and blowing stuff up. I can think of tons of others blu-rays I would rather see or hear about for that matter.
Mr. E @ May 29th 2008 3:59PM
There is room for all kinds of movies on Blu-ray. This one happens to be popular, that's all. For the rest of us, there are the initial slate of Criterion discs coming in October.
eugene @ May 29th 2008 3:53PM
And yet this is the article you read and commented on. Interesting.
Wii60Warrior @ May 29th 2008 5:23PM
Lol you're welcome Darren and the rest of the EngadgetHD crew!
As for the news I'm really excited for it. LOL at Truth Teller. What a pathetic life you must live...
Video Master @ May 29th 2008 5:45PM
This movie had a chance to be great. Thanks to Michael Bay for ruining it. I might like this film if I was 5 years old.
lee @ May 29th 2008 6:24PM
thank you video master, there is hope yet. Boycott Bay!!!
XDragon @ May 29th 2008 7:19PM
"start saving that $39.99 or so"
What a stupid comment. Hey bread went up in price, better save up for that extra 62 cents.
BTW, I've never paid $40 for a Blu-Ray disc, if you have, you're shopping in the wrong spots.
Nfinity @ May 29th 2008 10:54PM
Well if they indeed outmatch HD DVD version with all extras in HD, same interactive stuff that I really loved on HD DVD version and with improved transfer I might double dip for sure.
Mr. E @ May 30th 2008 12:20AM
Nfinity, have you turned over a new leaf? I like this new side of you much better. Keep up the positive attitude, seriously!
Achilles @ May 30th 2008 6:25PM
Nfinity, you're just not the same w/o your other Avatar.
