Tuning adapters hit CableLabs testing lair, still not ready for public consumption
This one probably goes without saying, but just in case you're inclined to waste a few gallons of precious regular unleaded searching for a tuning adapter, don't. The National Cable & Telecommunications Association (NCTA) and TiVo have jointly issued a release to inform the public that "several manufacturers of switched digital external tuning adapters have submitted products for formal testing at CableLabs." On the positive side, this means we're inching closer to seeing these devices hit store shelves, but sadly, it also means we're not done wading through red tape just yet. For those unfamiliar, these newfangled "tuning adapters" will enable TiVo Series3, TiVo HD and certain one-way set-top-boxes that utilize CableCARDs to "access digital cable channels delivered using switched digital (SDV) technology." Hit up the read link for all the details, and check out our hands-on galleries with a few of the boxes right here.

What is the big deal with these TA? Is any provider even using SDV yet? Is anyone missing out on recording HD cause there cable comp. uses SDV? I thought SDV was a thing in the future.
Just wondering...

I have Time Warner Cable here in San Antonio. I have a Tivo Series3 (with cable cards). To date, TWC-SA has 32 HD channels (39 if you include premium HD channels). Because of SDV, I can only receive 13 of the 32, even though I'm technically paying for all of them.

Cablevision in NY is also using SDV for their Voom channels, you can expect more use of it in the future.

I'm in northern Virginia using Cox cable, and a large chunk of my HD channels aren't accessible with my Tivo because of SDV.

adding to the "me too" - TWC in cincinnati uses SDV for any of the more recent HD channels that have been launched

We've been toyin and had our SDV deployed for almost a year already.. We've had to take it off a couple times due to bugs, but its been running now for goin on 6 mths pretty much glitch free.. At first I didnt like it, trouble shooting is a lil harder, but know that we all have a very good understanding of how this all works; its become a breeze..
Soon we will be adding 13 or 14 more HD channels due to the SDV.. Its great..

Many cable systems have already deployed SDV. Time Warner is one of the biggest systems to date.
For instance, every single HD channel on Oceania cable in Hawaii (except the broadcast stations) is using SDV.

Yup, its the basically the same in Albany, all but the broadcast channels and a select few(TNT, ESPN, ESPN2 and maybe a couple others) are SDV.

Those of us in colorado are likely to see SDV soon... we are home to a large Comcast office (and distribution centers) and cable labs is located here (about 5 minutes from my house here in lafayette). I have heard rumors that large parts of denver could start to see Comcast roll out SDV here soon.

OK, I read both articles on Engadget about Switched Digital Video AKA SDV, and I am somewhat lost on what this exactly will mean to me when it is available...This is what I really want to know, will I finally be able to utilize my WIndows Media Center PC and be able to record HD content? AKA Discovery HD, MOJO, etc Even if it is only limited to that particular PC? Is SDV an alternative to the ATI OCUR setup that is already out there?
Mr. E @ May 20th 2008 4:23PM
This is good news. I'm finally getting a TiVo HD to replace the crappy cable co. DVR, so it's good to know that this upgrade path will definitely be out there. My provider doesn't currently use SDV (and just upgraded their system to 1 GHz) but you never know what the future may hold!
Ryan @ May 20th 2008 4:32PM
Will this also allow me to do the "on demand" stuff?
Lawrence @ May 20th 2008 5:01PM
No, that's not likely to ever happen with Tivo HD or Series3, but I suppose it could happen further down the road with whatever Tivo releases in the future, assuming Tru2Way works likes it's supposed to.

It's too bad these boxes wouldn't work by themselves, without requiring you to have CableCards as well. I can imagine this would be easier for Rogers to handle in Canada, where we get no TiVo HD at all. : (

I hope this will help all those 1way CableCard TVs out there.. Cuz man, someone needs to think of them.. Theyve all gone thru a nightmare (most likely), if theyve had them from over a year ago.. Now, I very seldomly have to deal will cablecard TV issue, seems as if all the bugs were finnally worked out..
Phour ZwanZig @ May 24th 2008 8:41PM
CableCard is the meat.. It does all the decrypting, all this box basiclly will do is, call out to the server what channel the viewer wishes to watch and tell the CableCard where to find it..
