Pioneer to launch new West Coast stores in 2009
Left coast gadget-philes will have a few new playgrounds sometime after spring of 2009, when Pioneer adds at least three more West Coast locations to the current Costa Mesa, CA store. Specific locations and dates have not been announced, but the stores will hopefully add some brand presence for Pioneer as it gets its restructuring efforts underway. Yeah, it's ironic that the Pioneer store will be populated by Panasonic panels (and maybe Sharp, too), as well as JVC beamers. But hopefully this move will help give Pioneer some more of the upscale appeal it's seeking (and pricing for). We've chided Pioneer's marketing for not making better use of the fact that its plasmas were generally regarded as "top of the class," so hopefully this move marks a new approach. We'd also suggest reallocating concept car floor space to darkened demo theaters.

"Yeah, it's ironic that the Pioneer store will be populated by Panasonic panels..." is not correct. In this FY, 9G panels will be 100% R&D, manufactured and assembled in Pioneer facilities by Pioneer engineers. In the next FY, Matsushita and Pioneer will merge their two PDP divisions and jointly develop panels used for plasma displays. Pioneer and Panasonic will both use identical panels, but both companies will develop independently of one another their own drivers and processors in order to maintain a clear distinction between the lines.

Rolf -- thanks for making that clear. I didn't mean to imply that Panasonic branded displays would be at the Pioneer store, which is why I put the link on "Panasonic" to a story indicating exactly that. By the time these stores go live, the partnership should be getting underway (if not already underway), and believe me, we're all anxious to see that generation of Kuro, too! Look around and you'll see we get beat up for being Kuro fanboys around here (in our defense, we get to see things like the CES Project Kuro demo that most readers don't).

Steven, no worries. Pioneer appreciates your continued support! What with all the overhyped negative press and outright misinformation out there about the PDP merger, I just wanted to make sure your readers (in particular the new ones) weren't under the wrong impression.
Thanks for the space!
