LG's PG7000 plasma claims infinite contrast, too
And here you were thinking Pioneer would stand alone forever as the only outfit with an "infinite contrast" plasma in its arsenal. Not so, as LG has reportedly developed its own technology in order to produce a PDP with "absolute blackness," and if all goes to plan, we could see it surface by the end of July. Aside from that, we don't know much more about the PG7000 just yet, and while we're told the first model will indeed be 1080p, lower-resolution flavors are slated to follow. Get ready folks -- the battle for blackerness is about to get even darker.

Before anyone says this is stupid or ridiculous or impossible, I just wanted to say that it's really not that ridiculous. It's the law of diminishing returns. At some point the black level ratio is so high, it just doesn't matter anymore and the human eye begins to lose the ability to tell the difference between one ratio and another. So when the ratio becomes so high, to the human eye it's essentially infinite. And if there's any technology that can do it, it's plasma. If LCD ever kills plasma, i'm just gonna cry.

Loban, you are wrong. When you have a set that can achieve infinite black, you will see color in its purest form. You would be painting color on the screen with no influence of extra light. You will also gain the ability to achieve perfect shadow detail, but this will all depend on how the TV manages gamma. LG recent sets have made huge strides in quality and the number of adjustments that can be made. Even the 50PG20 now has more adjustments then my Elite Kuro. I am very excited to see these new panels since I'm also a dealer. What really is exciting is the fact LG has much lower prices then other manuafactures, because they produce the entire set inside and out so they can control cost. When these new panels hit they are gonna turn the industry of high end displays on its head, and cause the biggest reduction in price of high quality displays then we have yet had.

Despite the fact that LG has gotten better... they are still FAR from being a Pioneer. As someone in the business, LG has a long way to go before they are going to take one sale from Pioneer. As most whom buy Pioneer, at least in retail store (not us online price hunters), would never buy anything that what is considered the best. But at least LG has moved away from its days of triple pane glass. And from the picture, it looks as if they have also dropped the ridiculous recessed control panel with the buttons that are not tactile, and impossible to find in the dark because they only light up on contact, as they have had on their upper end plasmas of last year. I do like to see more interest in Plasmas though, I love the picture, and I could never find myself buying a 52" LCD to replace my current 50" Plasma (Kuro) and this gives me hope that there is chance that I will be able to replace it with something even better... and that Plasma's arent going anywhere soon.

It's like, how much more black could this be? And the answer is none. None more black.

Is anybody else expecting the next batch of plasma sets to claim a contrast ratio of infinity times two?
