For Time Warner Cable customers jealous over those
eight newcomers received by Cox subscribers in the OC earlier this year, how's about this? According to the flier you see above, a full dozen will be hitting the lineup in Southern California sometime soon, but unfortunately, we can't determine if we're talking "tomorrow" soon or "next quarter" soon. Nevertheless, you folks in the area can look forward to seeing Disney HD, HGTV HD, A&E HD, Food HD, ABC Family HD, National Geographic HD, History HD, Versus / Golf HD, CNN HD, TLC HD, ESPNews HD and Discovery HD slip into the lineup, which ought to make your nightly viewing much more enjoyable. C'mon TWC, spread the love elsewhere, will ya? [

About friggin' time. Now just 80 more to go before they're out of DirecTV's shadow.
LoydG @ May 13th 2008 8:38PM
I got one of these in the mail today and called to find out about it. I was told these would be available in July.
dkrift @ May 13th 2008 9:37PM
I am glad to hear that. I got a noticed a few weeks ago and thought it will never arrive.
Mark Kaplan @ May 13th 2008 8:42PM
What about SciFi HD?
Ivan @ May 13th 2008 10:03PM
Will this also include areas that were former Adelphia?
zephead @ May 13th 2008 10:23PM
It's really misleading how all these channels (or any digital channel that isn't 100% HD) are labeling themselves as "HD". With the impending analog shutoff, what they should be doing is labeling themselves as "digital", so people will know that they'll still work after Feb 2009. That in itself should signify that they're HD capable. So, if they're gonna be showing re-runs or just not producing some shows in HD, the channel is never gonna be 100% HD, and should not be labeled as such.
BTW, it's about time TWC added to their measly 27-ish HD channels.
zephead @ May 13th 2008 10:27PM
Ahhh... noticed it right when I pushed submit... that should be "their 27-ish measly DIGITAL channels." v_v Minus the ones like MHD who are 100% HD.
ben @ May 13th 2008 11:44PM
i've been under the impression that cable/satellite subscribers (and the channels broadcast on said systems) do not need to be switched to analog. only Over the air channels that you'd get through a regular antennae.
i agree though. i LOVE my directv and I got it over TW cable just because of the extra hd channels, but a lot of the directv hd channels (and some nowcoming to time warner) really are fakes and its quite annoying. disney channel HD, mtvHD (not MHD) and nickelodeon HD are some that pop right off the top of my head. neither of them has ever broadcast anything in real HD and i doubt they ever will at this rate.
zephead @ May 13th 2008 11:55PM
I'm not entirely sure, but it seems logical that if the "HD" channels are digital, then the regular ones must be analog, which are going to be shut off. Don't hold me to that, though. ;)
Blake @ May 14th 2008 12:19AM
Finally! I'm moving into a new house and was going over all the options. I decided it had to be cable for the number of TVs we want to hook up, but this will make it much easier to stick with TWC.
Tim @ May 14th 2008 12:49AM
Zephead, Time Warner already has all the normal channels in digital (non-HD) and analog. Channels like comedy central are broadcast in digital at lower resolutions than the HD channels. Also, the analog channels on cable systems do not need to be shut off when the analog shutoff occurs, that's only for over the air broadcasts.
zephead @ May 14th 2008 3:47PM
Ahh, got it. Thanks.
kenrelliott @ May 14th 2008 1:35AM
I got an announcement in the mail. I was dissappointed to say the least.
Give me HD VOD and SciFi at a minimum.
Dayton Guy @ May 14th 2008 9:12AM
Cable companys do not have to shut down their analog service when 02/17/09 arrives. Some cable companys are using that date to go "all-digital" but it has nothing to do with the over the air analog broadcast shut off. Some cable companies are just using that date as well to create less confusion to subscribers.
TWC Albany, NY seems to have the best lineup of all cable companies... They have the "standard" 80 channels in analog, the same 80 available in SD-Digital, and then some of the same channels in HD-Digital format. If you head over there and check out their channel lineup, it is IMO the best lineup of all cable companies.
Also if your cable company has a Free HD on Demand channel, check that out because my local company does not have Speed HD on the lineup but they do have a decent selection of shows from Speed on Demand available in HD.
Sammyfan @ May 14th 2008 10:04AM
Yeah, new channels are nice and all. I may live in the effected area but I'm still glad I dropped TW and went to Uverse last weekend. Getting these channels, and more, right now is better than maybe getting these channels...someday. And cheaper.
Sorry, TW. I was forced to stay with you for a long time but there's a new kid in town and you haven't reacted quickly enough.
Vance @ May 14th 2008 11:48AM
Is there any way to know where in SoCal these channels are coming? Or can we just assume that if we did not get such a flyer in the mail, we are not getting them?
Sammyfan @ May 14th 2008 1:20PM
Personally, I'd treat this promise like vaporware. That way if they ever do show up it will be a pleasant surprise. The system around my house in the San Fernando Valley needed all new switching. God knows how long that was going to take. I finally gave up on them.
Eric @ May 14th 2008 11:59AM
Now, if TW could just make their cable cards work right, we'd be set.
TheDave @ May 14th 2008 2:17PM
WOW...
That brings them up to what, 13-14 HD channels now for SoCal?
Awesome!
Way to go! Good Work!
/me goes back to enjoying his 100+ HD channels on DirecTV
TWC is such an abortion of a cable company in these parts.
If it wasn't a granted monopoly, they would have ZERO subscribers.
modenadude @ May 15th 2008 12:09PM
I have no clue where you are getting your figures from, with this addition TWC will have 35 HD channels. Of course that is no where near the 100 that DirecTV advertises, though, how many of those 100 are true HD? From TWC, all the channels currently in Southern California (24) are true HD. I for one love TWC and would never stray from them, monopoly or not.
TheDave @ May 16th 2008 5:59PM
modenadude,
Obviously you missed the sarcasm in my 1st sentence.
The rest is true though.
You have to be the first Happy TWC customer I have heard of around SoCal (LA/OC market, right?). Everyone else I know, hates em.
You obviously haven't gotten the dog shit customer service run-around for months on end like I did. Or tried to use a CableCard.
Like I said, they are very lucky they are allowed to be a Monopoly.
SoCalKings @ May 21st 2008 10:18AM
At this point I would rather a channel be called HD and still broadcast unpconverted 1080i broadcast with SD signals then the bad SD channels TWC transmits. Not to mention they compress the heck out of their HD signals, I can only imagine how much more that'll be compressed to make these new channels available (whenever that is). I'm glad I switched to Verizon FiOS.
Alex @ May 14th 2008 3:03PM
San Diego was supposed to get all of these, and then it turns out that only the old Adelphia customers got them. We moved to switched digital so with all the headaches from the new DVR software (F* Navigator btw!!!) they damn well better get a buttload of new HD channels out damn quick.
Ed @ May 14th 2008 11:52PM
Please don't be SDV (x3)!!!
--Tivo HD using So-Cal Time Warner customer
Jerry @ May 15th 2008 12:52PM
Sammyfan, too bad you can only watch / record a SINGLE HD channel across any number of HDTVs in your household at the same time. And you're paying $10 extra "HD technology fee" for this outstanding achievement. And when you do watch your single HD channel, it eats out of your bandwidth to slow down the internet. ATT's copper-wire TV crusade is a joke so far.
amolkold @ May 18th 2008 4:51AM
Finally! I'm a SoCal TWC customer and I can't get a dish because of line of sight. All I get are HD locals (CBS, NBC, CW, ABC, KCAL, FOX, and 2 PBS, a special TWC channel that broadcasts FSN HD only when they feel like it, MusicHD, TNTHD, Discovery HD Theater, TBS"HD", ESPN HD, and ESPN2HD. MojoHD, HDNet, HDMovies, Universal HD (those last 4 I have to pay for)
VERY VERY LIMITED. I HATE TWC.
StevieD @ May 19th 2008 1:11PM
With TWC I get in HD KCET, KCAL, KTLA and KOCE in HD. Also HD VOD and 7mb internet. ALL NOT AVAILABLE ON SATELLITE!
