Clearly a sonically mismatched system, but at 500 bucks for a pair of Paradigms retailing for 1200, I couldn't pass up the deal. Soon the matching Paradigm surrounds and center will come.

The only thing that kills it for me is the lack of HDMI input, and hence TrueHD/DTS-MA out of a PS3 into my receiver. I'm looking for a new receiver and after seeing the Onkyos in the store I'm not a big fan. They look cheap.

What does everybody think about the Sony STR-DG920 and ES line?

I need a lot of power for my NHT 5.1 system as well.

Also, will the PS 3 support True HD - DTS?

Having had a 5.1 set-up for just as long, and having since recently upgraded to a 52 inch LCD, I began looking for a new Sony receiver that would be able to output via HDMI with all the most current audio codecs. In my search I have found the STR-DG920 and am awaiting its release sometime late this month. 7.1 channel audio output, 4 HDMI audio ins, and DTS-HD MA make it a no-brainer for the price. I'm not familiar with Sony's ES line.

As for the PS3, Sony just released a firmware update making it compatible with Dolby True HD and DTS-HD Master Audio. It also supports bitstream and (currently) 2 ch. LCPM audio. Basically the bitstream audio is a compressed source made just small enough (2.5 MB per sec.?) so that optical cable and such can handle it. LCPM is a lossless, uncompressed audio source that is, according to what I've heard, the most true and pure version of what was mastered in the studio. Of course some also argue that with the new DTS-HD MA and Dolby True HD codecs there is little difference between a bitstreamed source and LCPM. Apples to oranges, and I think it all comes down to personal preference.

Does an amazing job upconverting DVDs.

For sound i have axiom audio m3 fronts and axiom audio QS4 rears. I don't have a center or a woofer yet, cause i have a pretty small space. So officially I am a 4 channel system. Using a $150 Sony DD5.1/DTS receiver. Once they release a mac mini that has blu-ray support i'll upgrade the mini and the receiver.

Axiom has amazing speakers for really good value. You can get an impressive 5.1 speaker system for $1000.

Got a 5.0 downstairs based on some RCA bipoles for the roommates to enjoy, and a 5.1 rig back home for the parents with a Har Kar receiver driving three-way custom speaker cabs, plus a custom sub with two 18" woofers in push-pull configuration. Great for big group movie watching.

My personal rig is upstairs, for sound editing, but I watch a movie or two sometimes. PC-driven via M-Audio Delta 1010 plus corrective EQ on all channels, going to five Alesis ProLinear 720 studio monitors, two modded 12" Sony subs, and some room treatments. Flat response (+/- 2 dB) 30 Hz-20 kHz when measured at listening position.
