50 years of NASA footage hits Discovery in HD this summer
Sure now we get live HD from the ISS like it's nothing, but much of the last half century of space exploration has never been seen by most in anything other than grainy analog broadcasts. That'll change in June once When We Left Earth: The NASA Missions debuts on Discovery Channel, drawing from more than 150 hours of NASA footage, called a cross between The Right Stuff and EHD fave Planet Earth. The Orlando Sentinel mentions the new doc is part of a push to ensure funding to speed further space explorations, as long as they provide more great HD opportunities we're all for it. Look for the Blu-ray boxed set July 24 for $79.95.

There goes $60 out of my wallet.

Very Cool!
Oddly enough, this lists for just $10 more than the standard DVD version (which streets 2 weeks earlier).

That's cool, but it's really not too surprising. If you check around, movies on Blu-ray are almost always listing for either the same price or $5 more than the special edition DVD of the same title. We just need stores to help us out a bit by running loss leaders on Blu-ray titles. Hopefully soon!

This sounds like a very nice release! Also, for those space enthusiasts who missed it, The Criterion Collection announced that among their initial releases will be For All Mankind. FAM is a mesmerizing portrait of the Apollo program, and will be a very welcome addition to my Blu-ray collection.

It's sad to think that it's been so long now since we've visited the Moon. I just hope that within 15 years or so we can get some HD pictures of astronauts on Mars!

Even if I don't watch it all, if it'll support the space program, I'm all over it :)

New Blu-ray content is huge, even if most of this isn't shot in HD origionaly.... Look what Planet Earth did for the format..
Great stuff here

When will they offer any of their programs via streaming? HD streaming is started, so why are Discovery, The BBC, etc not offering these programs on the Internet? Companies like EdgeStream are enabling real HD streaming.
