Verizon to take on Comcast in Manassas, Virginia
Oh sure, Verizon's not coming right out and admitting that it's looking to go mano a mano with Comcast in Manassas, Virginia, but you can bet it'll be trying to sway customers away from the cable carrier as soon as it launches FiOS TV there. Not content with upgrading the network in areas of Southeastern Virginia, the operator has just announced that it has received a cable franchise from the City Council enabling it to provide FiOS TV to 12,000 more households in the NoVa region. Unfortunately, just 1,100 city domiciles are within reach at the moment, but Verizon is slated to string fiber to that other lot within three years. 'Tis a shame three years is practically an eternity.

for those living in the Linton Hall area, this was a response from a Verizon rep I got an email from:
In checking the schedules, your address is not on any of the work orders in the system through early fall. The serving office for your area is in Manassas, and as you know it will take a while to get from there to your community. The good news is that the Bristow area is the preliminary stages of engineering, and we should probably see some jobs begin coming out by the end of 2008 or early 2009 (providing we continue to make good progress).

Parts of eastern Manassas have had fios available for a while now but the city council just approved the tv part. The fiber laying contractors are steadily making their way to the western part of the county in the last few months. Unfortunately I'm in Gainesville and didn't make the list this month but I'm expecting within the next few months that they will get out my way since parts of Dominion valley are scheduled for May.

is this a picture of a guy bringing fiber to this home?

Did anyone read the press release?
There is "Manassas", and then there's "City of Manassas". A LOT of western Prince William County is called "Manassas" (by name and/or by post office), but it's not in the City. This press release is regarding the City (where >I< live!), not Bristow or Gainesville or Linton Hall (or Nokesville or Sudley Manor or Haymarket or Evergreen or ...). If Verizon has a cable franchise to provide FIOS in Prince William County, that's unrelated to THIS announcement.
THREE YEARS??? ***sobbing***
I registered on the FIOS web site for notification probably 2 years ago now, and other than an email confirming my registration I've never heard boo out of Verizon (though I DID know this having watched the City Council session on tv). Maybe I'll go register AGAIN... :)
