GTA IV sets sales records with 6 million unit / $500 million first week
Amazingly, prerelease estimates of a $400 million first week for the latest edition of Grand Theft Auto turned out to be low, with publisher Take-Two trumpeting a 6 million unit, $500 million debut. GTA in HD isn't without controversy however, with reports of overscan issues on older HDTVs (we've experienced it, with the last number or letter in mission descriptions sometimes running off the screen), and the PlayStation 3 version of the game not quite meeting our 720p expectations (although some say differences in textures and lighting more than make up for it). Being "only" 640p didn't stop previous record holder Halo 3, and looking at the numbers it appears Rockstar has made the right moves as well, although we're sure some will wait for the inevitable PC version to run the game in as high a resolution as possible.[Via Joystiq]

I'm holding off on getting this until a patch comes out. I don't want to run the risk of bricking my PS3 as slim a chance it may be. Looks like a good game though.

Not sure it fixed what you are talking about but I had to download a patch today for it, version 1.01.
stiltskin @ May 7th 2008 11:04PM
Yea it was 18 MB slowest 18 mb ive ever downloaded took as long as a PS3 update takes but installed in a second.
It freezes barely every once in a while not often.
The lighting looks odd I adjusted it in settings it look ok now.
Stevey 1337 @ May 7th 2008 11:34AM
^^^ Wtf are you talking about?
lakersin2025 @ May 7th 2008 11:55AM
This is what I'm talking about...

I was having the same freezing issues on loading... easy solution: log out of PSN. Not a single freeze again in hours of play.
Weirdly if you get the freeze and try to quit the game, it actually panics the ps3 and makes it watchdog reset. First time I've had anything go weird on my ps3.
DeadPlasmaCell @ May 7th 2008 11:58AM
I know the PS3 version is having some issues, but I don't think I've heard anything of it actually breaking the system.. I've had no issues with my 360 version. Great game
Nfinity @ May 7th 2008 12:18PM
This is really to be expected. The game is unbelievable.
I just have to say that it's completely false that PS3 version has ANYTHING better.
First of all, the smoother edges as some suggest and overall smoother look is not present because of some better processing PS3 has. It's there EXACTLY because of the fact that PS3 version of the game is upscaled from 630p to 720p. By doing this, PS3 is making jagginess in the edges somewhat smoother but the problem with this is that your whole environment and details also suffer making everything with significantly more blur and less details.
I don't even know what the whole thing with texture and lighting is because lighting looks exactly the same on both versions (yes I bought X360 and borrowed a PS3 version from a friend to compare) and textures are again sharper and more detailed on Xbox 360.
On top of that, the drawing distance is much more detailed on Xbox 360 version.
Add to everything the downloadable content (which I really don't understand how anyone can just dismiss - especially how great this game is - and downloadable content is actually new episodes and stories within the GTA4) plus flawless multiplayer and the whole Live thing, the whole thing makes you wonder how anyone would buy a PS3 to play this game.
I mean I understand people having only PS3 already. That's fine. But someone buying PS3 just to play GTA4 or even someone who has both and buys PS3 version is absolutely mind-blowing.
No favorism here, just common sense. I would assume that people would want to get most bang for the buck and better version.
Btw a really great example of comparison on Game Trailers in real HD where you can actually SEE how much less detailed PS3 version is and that's at 630p.
Some comparison screenshots from the video:

And watch in HD. It's very clear.

"I just have to say that it's completely false that PS3 version has ANYTHING better."
Where in this article did it say ANYTHING like that?
lakersin2025 @ May 7th 2008 12:45PM
Holy shit. Do you stay up at night with a Blu-Ray voodoo doll poking needles in it? Give it a rest dude. Anytime I see your American Psycho pic I know we are in for another stab at Blu-Ray. We get it. Blu-Ray is the devil. Blah blah...
MAK1981 @ May 7th 2008 1:26PM
Wow, if those PS3 vs. XBox360 screenshots actually are an indication, then I definitely see the difference. I couldn't load the videos, because I'm at work.
As for me... I have the XBox360 version, and it's a great great game. But I plan on taking it back for a new copy, because I'm having some game freezing glitches that I guess some of the first burned copies had. Some friends haven't had a single problem. Hopefully a new copy fixes this for me.
I still want to know why people HATED Halo3 for "only" being 640P, but now when it's 720P vs 640P, people now say the 640P is better.... I just don't get people.

A friend of mine has the overscan issue as well. He has a 30" Samsung CRT HDTV, and he says it's so bad that he can't see how much money he has in the top right corner and some of his map in the lower left gets cut off.
TreyIM @ May 7th 2008 1:28PM
U know, this was flame bait by Engadget to even mention the technical aspects of the game on each system and many of u fell for it, hook, line and stupidity.
This article should have soley been about the feat of new sales record achieved by this GTA. Shame on Engadget, eh? HA!
Anyway, I wanna dork out and say this game is THE SHIT!! I have EVERY SINGLE CONSOLE VERSION of GTA, including the London missions on my PS2 (actually, it was a PS1 game but u understand, don't u?). When the first GTA came out on PS, I bought it for my PS then some kids lucked up and walked in/out my house taking said PS and ALL the games, including GTA.
Picked GTA up, again, well after PS2 came out when the 3in1 GTA pack came out, with the London missions and GTA 2...
I used to tell my boys, that if GTA looked like Driver, after first seeing driver online then getting the game when it came out, then GTA would KILL! Next thing u know, GTA 3 is announced and has that real world look to it.
This game is honestly my fave game of all time and I was really hoping for a nice leap in tech when it came out on the next gen systems (should we actually still be calling them next gen?? Ha) and GTA IV delievered in spades. I continue to dork out to friends about this game as I find out more and more things that the game now does...
Ahem, that's enough dorking for the day. Peas...
longhairbilly @ May 7th 2008 2:23PM
WOW! I knew the game would sell well, but these numbers are really impressive! Great job RockStar.
owl @ May 7th 2008 3:02PM
So has Joystiq and Engadget HD merged? Why is this story here?
badweasel @ May 7th 2008 5:27PM
yeah.. i got suckered into this one too.
JakeB @ May 7th 2008 7:52PM
I'm sorry, I know its just me but, I dont like any of the GTA games. I don't see what is so enticing about this one besides how much more real it looks. I would rather go around in God of War and rip people in half with his bare hands than run around a city beating people up and shooting them. I know I am going to get a lot of hate from pratically everyone for this but hey, oh well.
I'm returning this game to GameStop and hope that I can get my money back.
