The irony of this statement is staggering. You sure like to post here about how you continue to go out and buy things (such as as add-on for a game console) to support your HD-DVD collection with pride, yet try to turn around and tell anyone who is buying Blu-Ray they are buying a "dead game console format" like that statement actually makes any sense whatsoever in the real world. You are literally buying a discontinued piece of hardware to play a optical format that has been discontinued. I'm beginning to believe you don't understand what a "dead format" is.

So you say your collection will last another ten years... why is it my Blu-Ray collection won't? At least they're still releasing new movies in my format of choice and I don't have to "brag" about renting and ripping them (and you wonder why they put DRM on them... not that it really seems to matter.)

You continue to support a format that was declared dead by it's creator... yet try to mock others for supporting a format that was declared dead by nobody but you. And I stress the word "try" because at this point I don't think you even believe what you are saying and are just trying to stir the pot on this site. (and it's a back-up to my Toshiba standalone so I need never worry about my expanding HD DVD collection being playable in the years to come.
An HD DVD collection I might add which is still well worth adding to - at incredibly inexpensive prices - given that HD DVD always did concentrate more on the adult classic market than the kiddies game console 'PS3 demographic' .
There were 800+ HD DVD titles released worldwide and 450+ in the English speaking western world, I have over 50 now, plenty to go for and to enjoy yet).

It works out at a fraction of any credible Blu-ray alternative and I continue to buy brand new movies at £5/$10 or less

Non-commercial personal copying in the UK is perfectly legal, despite the lies 'the industry' has tried to promote.
It is not a criminal offense in the UK and as far as our civil law goes there has not been a substantial enough body of civil law precedent established on the matter yet to give the kind of conclusive answers 'the industry' thinks it can spout to frighten people with.
Just because the US has gotten so f*cked up that it has gone along with it's law to becoming so obviously subservient to narrow business interests does not mean that the UK has followed suit.).

I preferred HD DVD because it was obvious that the intent behind Blu-ray is exactly what we are now seeing.
Over-priced, DRM-infested and largely aimed at the game console kids upon whom the whole thing depends, thanks to the PS3.

Blu-ray is IMO the dumb choice for high def.
It practically guarantees HDMs on disc will never go beyond the niche.
That's what I have against it, primarily.

I bought & continue to buy HD DVD because it serves my needs better.
It's exactly the same high def quality but in a far more attractive package at far more attractive prices and usually the kind of content I want to buy to keep.

My point about the game consol demographic relates to the sh!te Blu-ray catalogue.

The latest childish US summer blockbuster 'action' movie is not usually my idea of something worth buying.
The Kubrick and Scorsese movies are, for instance.
You get Spiderman 3 and I get 2001, The Shining or Goodfellas at at least 1/4 the price you're paying.

Whos knows when (or indeed if) all the current HD DVD titles will ever appear on Blu-ray.....and even if they did why would they bother spending money on making them any different?
Even when Paramount did encode their dual releases differently there was no visible or audible differences between the 2 formats, despite all the repeated BS about simplistic notions regarding BD's extra capacity and it's effect on the a/v product.

The truth is that downloading a personal copy of (any) movie for personal use is not a criminal act in the UK.
