It would help to say where in Ireland they're going for 9.99. I would pick one up just to use as an external DVD drive. I need to install Ubuntu onto my Eee PC and this would by ideal.

That is a pretty funny picture. Great illustration considering how fast the price fell on this thing, which is surprising given that even if you don't use it to watch HD-DVDs on a 360, it's still a good optical drive and I've heard some people use it to watch regular DVDs through their system just to reduce wear on their master drive. Not a bad idea really, especially if you can get it so cheap.

I can't remember the last time I paid more than $24 for a movie on Blu-Ray. There are plenty of places out there to buy sub-$20 discs.

This is great news for Eastern European countries where electronic items are really expensive. Especcially places like Russia, Bosnia, Latvia, etc. They can enjoy all the movies that are pretty much up to date in HD and actually afford it. Now if they only had an HDTV first. But hey, there are always people that spend too much money on things they care about, so why not blow your 3 month salary on an HDTV and start enjoying the future of entertainment.

That's me & my (still growing nicely) HD DVD collection totally sorted in
case of any possible breakdowns or damages for the next 10yrs at
least.
(Just bought the combo American Gangster - inc extended version - for £3.50/$7.

The irony of this statement is staggering. You sure like to post here about how you continue to go out and buy things (such as as add-on for a game console) to support your HD-DVD collection with pride, yet try to turn around and tell anyone who is buying Blu-Ray they are buying a "dead game console format" like that statement actually makes any sense whatsoever in the real world. You are literally buying a discontinued piece of hardware to play a optical format that has been discontinued. I'm beginning to believe you don't understand what a "dead format" is.
So you say your collection will last another ten years... why is it my Blu-Ray collection won't? At least they're still releasing new movies in my format of choice and I don't have to "brag" about renting and ripping them (and you wonder why they put DRM on them... not that it really seems to matter.)
You continue to support a format that was declared dead by it's creator... yet try to mock others for supporting a format that was declared dead by nobody but you. And I stress the word "try" because at this point I don't think you even believe what you are saying and are just trying to stir the pot on this site. You have to be at least on some level aware that nobody on here takes you seriously.
I'm sure you'll ignore most of what I said and reply with your usual cut-n-paste insults, so don't forget your now token circle jerk comments, those never get old and make you sound really mature and reasonable (not at all like a bitter red-camp supporter).

(and it's a back-up to my Toshiba standalone so I need never worry about my expanding HD DVD collection being playable in the years to come.
An HD DVD collection I might add which is still well worth adding to - at incredibly inexpensive prices - given that HD DVD always did concentrate more on the adult classic market than the kiddies game console 'PS3 demographic' .
There were 800+ HD DVD titles released worldwide and 450+ in the English speaking western world, I have over 50 now, plenty to go for and to enjoy yet).
But carry on, you enjoy your dead game console format

As much as you want Blu-Ray to be a dead format it isn't. They are still making them and studios continue to announce plans to make more. Can that be said about HD-DVD?

I've spent just a couple of hundred ($) on all of my HD DVD stuff, actually.
It works out at a fraction of any credible Blu-ray alternative and I continue to buy brand new movies at £5/$10 or less
(many real classics simply not available and possibly never to be available on Blu-ray).
Just cos you got suckered & willingly continue to be suckered for your high def doesn't mean the rest of us have been or are being.

You see the Blu-ray (PS3 demographic) movies are almost (if not quite) without exception the instantly forgettable cr@p Hollywood puts out these days.
That's what I have my Sky HD satellite service for.
If I like them I can always get a reencode or a straight rip

Non-commercial personal copying in the UK is perfectly legal, despite the lies 'the industry' has tried to promote.
It is not a criminal offense in the UK and as far as our civil law goes there has not been a substantial enough body of civil law precedent established on the matter yet to give the kind of conclusive answers 'the industry' thinks it can spout to frighten people with.
Just because the US has gotten so f*cked up that it has gone along with it's law to becoming so obviously subservient to narrow business interests does not mean that the UK has followed suit.).
......and you ought to learn to read properly.
I said I have over 50 HD DVDs (it's actually 500+ DVDs I own).
Nothing like your "thousands" spent on HD DVD.

I preferred HD DVD because it was obvious that the intent behind Blu-ray is exactly what we are now seeing.
Over-priced, DRM-infested and largely aimed at the game console kids upon whom the whole thing depends, thanks to the PS3.
Blu-ray is IMO the dumb choice for high def.
It practically guarantees HDMs on disc will never go beyond the niche.
That's what I have against it, primarily.
I bought & continue to buy HD DVD because it serves my needs better.
It's exactly the same high def quality but in a far more attractive package at far more attractive prices and usually the kind of content I want to buy to keep.
My point about the game consol demographic relates to the sh!te Blu-ray catalogue.
The latest childish US summer blockbuster 'action' movie is not usually my idea of something worth buying.
The Kubrick and Scorsese movies are, for instance.
You get Spiderman 3 and I get 2001, The Shining or Goodfellas at at least 1/4 the price you're paying.
You're welcome to yours.
Whos knows when (or indeed if) all the current HD DVD titles will ever appear on Blu-ray.....and even if they did why would they bother spending money on making them any different?
Even when Paramount did encode their dual releases differently there was no visible or audible differences between the 2 formats, despite all the repeated BS about simplistic notions regarding BD's extra capacity and it's effect on the a/v product.
.....and I'm "justifying" nothing. Just telling it like it is.
The truth is that downloading a personal copy of (any) movie for personal use is not a criminal act in the UK.
It is also true regarding what I said about civil law, it remains very much open to question as there has not been a sufficient body case law built up for anyone to proniunce either way.
So you and any other lapdogs of the RIAA and/or MPAA can go f*ck yourselves, just because you can't wait to bend over for big business in the USA is no reason to day-dream that the rest of us have been so stupid.
