It looks to me like Sony is really jacking up the licensing fees to get back all those subsidies.  Blu-ray may be the better format technically, but it is also the more expensive one by far.  Funny how Sony's PS3 is the only viable choice. Sony does not "own Blu-ray.  They do not control what LG or Panasonic can charge for their machines.  They are not the sole patent owners (Panasonic shares in this along with 15 other CE companies).  They also hare their position on the board of directors with most of the big Japanese and Korean CE companies as well as studios like Warner.<br><br>Sony is not causing this player to be 700 dollars.  The price is purely Panasonic's decision and what an unfortunate decision it is. MSRP could be deliberately set high to give stores piles of room to set their own prices and pretend to "discount" it. I very much doubt it will sell anywhere close to $699. People were paying very high prices back in the late 1990's for the first DVD players. $700 to $500. The prices will come down just as they did for regular DVD players. It just takes a little time. This player will be much cheaper a year from now. Just remember how much an HDTV was a few years back. That changed quickly.<br>My point is this is the first Standalone Blu-ray that is 2.0 Profile and decodes DTS-HD MA  And Dolby TrueHD in the player itself. <br>The new technology costs more initially, I don't see why people are surprised by that. Sure I'd love it if this 2.0 profile player was $349. But I also know the first models with NEW technology always cost more.  'The price will come down'. Remember DVD players came out in 1997.  So, 4 years after a format debut, I paid $700.  The MSRP on that was above $1000.  I got in on sale.  I sold it for $180 last year and bought a PS3.  <br><br>So, I don't think $700 MSRP for a top of the line player for a 2 year old format is bad! Back then it had no component out, progressive scan or anamorphic support.<br><br>Although I don't relish the $700 price (or even the $600 price at Visual Apex), stand alone players will drop as DVD players have.  We all know the cost for being early adopters. All the fanboys proclaiming Blu-ray is already dead are (conveniently) ignoring the early prices of DVD and VHS players as well as adoption time (DVD took 4 years to really hit the mainstream, VHS took longer).    Not to mention they don't see the significant hurdles digital downloads have to overcome to be mainstream and naively think they are going to become ubiquitous overnight.<br><br>This may just be an example of a premium priced player designed for a niche market. Even if people aren't holding off purchase for the final spec of a product? <br><br>The fact of the matter is that Panasonic is releasing this with an high (SUGGESTED RETAIL) price to get a few extra bucks out of the eager beavers with a lot of cash. There are a lot of people who will buy at or around this price, so they want to get their money while they can.
