Do they know that it also would help if they were to produce their shows in "HD" ,I for one hate the non-HD shows on the channel. I love watching football on their network , but I don't like watching everything else in non-HD.
Doc, we do know. I'm an employee for the NFL Network. We have plans to go entirely HD with our programming sometime in 2009. I can't give an actual date, but this is what we have in the works. Right now everything we do at the network is completely done in HD. Right down to the graphics. Unfortunately, only the programming being broadcast out of our Mount Laurel facility in New Jersey (NFL Films) is able to transmit in HD to your homes.
As this was stated before, distribution has been the biggest obstacle facing every aspect of the network. From new shows, better coverage and right down to employee salaries. As an employee there and football fan, I believe wholeheartedly in the network and would love to see it the success it will no doubt become soon.
Well, thank you for your response and info. I'd love to spend more time watching the NFL network and I'm glad to see that sometime in 2009 I will be able to do so. On a side note is the fact that they are blaming distribution in all reality a reflection of mis-sided or poor upper level management? If the focus is on viewer ship and you see the success that ESPN has with regard to HD, it should have been a primary goal IMO. Since if you really think about it your competition is very small and you have to know that most sports fans either have HD or are about to switch to HD after watching games at their friends house in HD.
While I'm not at liberty to speak of managements decisions, I will say that it's been a bit of an uphill battle to foresee all the obstacles a new network faces.
A lot of people don't realize the pieces it takes to put a successful network together and while it's very easy to criticize, a lot of planning needs to go into everything we do. A lot of it is just a learning process. Anyone you speak to who helped start ESPN can tell you the same thing. ESPN is a force almost 30 years in the making. Their switch to digital was likely much easier being it was a network well established once it decided to do so.
Right now our main priorities are settling our distribution deals, making sure that every cable carrier carries our network which as many of you have been following, have not exactly been favoring the NFL Network. But if you are a fan of the network, take comfort in knowing that everything is being done to settle this as quickly as possible and that the right people are now in place to make this happen. Many of which are former executives from ESPN and who have helped make that network the success that it is.
Your right it is easy to complain before you know all the background on the issue. I am glad that they at least know that it's an important issue that they need to address. 2009 will be here soon so I'm not that worried. The good thing is that at least the football games will still be in HD even if the network might not be fully there yet. You know the saying it's easier said than done..
