LG Display aiming to mass produce 32-inch OLED TVs in 2011
Oh yeah, we're mildly excited that LG Display should be able to start cranking out product from its 8G LCD plant earlier than expected, but the real kicker here is the outfit's outlook on OLED. Merely two days after hearing that Samsung was hoping to dish out affordable medium-to-large OLED displays in 2009 / 2010, we're now getting word that LG Display is looking to offer up a 32-incher the year after. And we're talking "volume production," no less. Makes holding off on that XEL-1 that much easier, doesn't it? Nah, we didn't really think so.[Via OLED-Info]

2011? Here's a question, don't those things drink power, even sony's 11" OLED model?

I hear there's a way you can type words into a 'search query field' to discover information on the Internet.
OLED displays are more power-efficient than LCD displays.

In the current climate for energy conservation its understandable why people would want a TV/Display that consumes less power, it makes sense economically, even if you are stupid enough not to believe in Climate Change.
OLED by its very nature will use far less energy than any tech gone before it. It does away with the need for a back light for example, not only is this good for power it also gets rid of the lighthouse most of you have in your rooms (LCD - or LighthouseCrappyDisplay as I like to call it).
I did read that the XEL-1 pulled down a fair bit of power displaying whites but we have to remember this is the first generation. I remember selling Plasmas that would burn you.
Give it time and you will be wondering why you ever thought LCD looked good. I know Ben and Steve on the Podcasts have been giving LCD a hard time (not in recent weeks however) I dont think they go anywhere far enough.
If your buying an LCD your being ripped off. I dont understand how these things get good reviews from AV magazines either. "Excellent black levels" I mean WTF, where are these guys testing these displays, the sun? I also dont understand how engineers working for Toshiba or Sony can be happy producing a display that is inferior to the stuff they were pumping out 10 years ago (apart from resolution).
I for one welcome our new OLED overlord. I just cant wait to be able to watch a film in HD, with the lights out and being able to make out what is going on.

sixtyfps: way to go. but you missed the part where Doc was talking in the present tense.
Yes, OLED's *theoretically* consume less power than LCD...but in terms of products available to consumers *now*, they don't.
If *you* used the internet to look things up, you'd see Sony's 11" OLED consumes 45 Watts. That's about the same as the rating on many 20" LCD TV's. Keep in mind, that 20" screen has almost 4 times the screen area of an 11" screen...
So, yes, as Doc suggested, current OLED (well, the one that's been available for a few months) tech does indeed drink a bunch of power.
Of course, OLED has a ways to go, and will eventually be lower power than LCD as is theoretically possible...
