Blu-ray releases on April 22nd, 2008
The big news this week is what's not being released on Blu-ray, as the two biggest titles released today on DVD are not available in HD. The biggest one is easily Cloverfield, which is obviously MIA because Paramount has yet to release any Blu-ray movies since going Red exclusive. But the bigger mystery is why Fox isn't releasing The Savages on Blu -- this doesn't leave Blu with much. We have two sub-par horror flicks with One Missed Call having an unbelievably low IMDB score of 2.8 out of 10 and Sublime is pretty pitiful itself at 5.2. Your best bet this week is the Global Warming documentary from National Geographic, which looks interesting but is no Planet Earth. Next week is a little better though, but still another unexciting week of releases for April.Blu-ray
- National Geographic: Six Degrees Could Change the World (National Geographic)
- One Missed Call (Warner)
- The Orphanage (New Line)
- Sublime (Warner)

I haven't seen cloverfield, but froom footage I saw, it looks like alot of it was on handheld camera... Would this benefit from blu-ray (other than audio...) Were those even HD cams?

Yep, HD cams, but shot in a handheld style. It would definitely benefit from a Blu-ray presentation. I'll pass on the DVD and save my money for the eventual BD release. I'm especially looking forward to seeing the many extras that will flesh out the Cloverfield experience.

Looks like many studios are saving the good stuff for summer / fall. The releases start to kick up in June quite substantially.

I'm picking up The Orphanage this week. It's gotten great critical acclaim, and I'm always up for a good scary flick.

Would it be possible, for future BD release threads, to also include the Rotten Tomato rating? Or some sort of rating...
Unfortunately, Rotten Tomato and HDD are blocked at my work. :(

I usually include a IMDB score if it is really high or really low, but average movies I leave it out.

I think this is a good idea. Blu-ray.com does movie reviews but they should be confining their opinion to the picture, sound and features and not the movie. At the end of the review there should be the movie score and a separate disk score.
At the moment they munge all the scores together into one and compound the issue by not scoring any movie less than 2.5 out of 5.0. Blu Ray might be great and all, but a bad movie is still a bad movie no matter how many pixels you throw at the screen.
It totally skews the results. Using RT or IMDB's movie rating and keeping it separate from the disk rating would solve this issue and make the reviews far more trustworthy.

I hope something happens soon, the available movie selections are worthless. Studios dragging their feet.

I hope something happens soon, the available BR movie selections are worthless. The studios are really dragging their feet.

What, The Orphanage isn't even worth a mention? That movie was great, definitely worth picking up! It might not be a blockbuster, but still very well done.

Cloverfield was a crazy flick. To those who haven't seen it, try to to watch it on the biggest screen you can (really helps with immersing you into the film). The fact that it was shot with HD cameras is all the more reason to hold out for the Blu version.
The next few months do look kind of bleak for new releases. Does anyone know if/when Sweeney Todd will be released on Blu-Ray???

A lot of the big early 2008 releses were Uni / Para, and now we are paying the price of their choices :/
Ah well, with Bill saying that the Para anounce should now only be days away, I think it should get better soon.
