Nielsen VideoScan High-Def market share for week ending April 13th, 2008

Sorry we're a little late on this week's Nielsen VideoScan numbers courtesy of Home Media Magazine, as again this week Blu-ray's market share is pretty low. It's not too hard to figure out how though, as 11 out of the top 20 DVDs for the same week aren't available on Blu-ray. While Alvin, The Water Horse and There Will be Blood rule DVD, the long legged I Am Legend again takes the number one spot on the charts -- after giving Alvin a turn last week. To put things into perspective, I Am Legend only sold 20% as many copies as Alvin on DVD. The night crawler movie didn't do too bad on HD DVD either, as it easily outsold any other HD DVD title by almost 9:1 and has us scratching our head that it didn't take the number 10 spot on the High-Def Sellers chart. Blu-ray should fare better next week, as DVD doesn't have as much of an advantage in the exclusives department, and Blu has a few titles we expect to do well like the latest AVP.

I personally wonder how many of this 5% of bluray bought are being bought by larger retail rental chains and how many are being bought for home-use by average joes.
I honestly own 2 hd-dvd movies(both came with player) and 0 blu-ray. For the most part, I find that the $30.00 - $40.00 they are asking for a new movie is too much. I'd almost rather buy it on dvd...but dvd looks so ugly to me now that I've gotten used to blu-ray and hd-dvd so I just rent mosty.

not a lot to coment and debate here. noraml. may their owners watch them and discover the magic of filming and enjoy each and everyone they bought.

I'm confused! I figured that by now the studios would be releasing Blu-ray discs along side their DVD counterparts. Why would only 9 of the top 20 releases be available on Bluray and not all of them? Are these new releases or old catalog titles taking the top spot?
Can someone explain why the studios aren't releasing ALL their new releases on Blu-ray same day as DVD???

Slow progression as expected but still good considering the movies that are coming out.
For me, I haven't bought a Blu disc since I, Robot & Independence Day came out because the "new releases" of late aren't movies I'm interested in.
I'd prefer to buy some older movies like Gladiator, The Lord Of The Rings Trilogy, Batman Begins, National Treasure, Indiana Jones Trilogy, The Matrix Trilogy, Transformers and even some Disney Classics.
The next "new releases" I'll be interested in will be The Dark Knight, National Treasure 2, Harry Potter 6, 7a, 7b, Transformers 2, The Hobbit and Indiana Jones 4 so regardless of format, I feel movies have been pretty dull which is dissapointing.

The margin between Blu Ray and a dead format is still the same. First HD-DVD and pretty soon Blu Ray (SACD anyone).
It's over, bring on the downloads.

I couldn't disagree with you more; I'm surprised how low HD-DVD is this week.
They should have good numbers for quite some time still considering the sales that are going on.
Just because its dead doesn't mean sales drop to 0 really fast. There's still plenty of value out there for HD-DVD player owners as there's nothing wrong with them picking up an HD version of a movie for less than the DVD version's price.
You also have to remember that HD-DVD owners will not typically be quick to jump on the Blu wagon, that and look at the new releases... their crap movies and who's going to buy this stuff on DVD, never mind Blu-Ray?
Blu will take off when big back catalog movies are released and when some decent new movies come out; the next PS3 price drop will also help. Till then, its slim pickings ..even for DVD.
eHD,
you guys should show the total sales numbers as 95% one week can mean something very different then 95% another week.

Vince: Was SACD ever even a valid format? I don't remember ever walking into Target or WalMart and seeing significant shelf space for it, or DVD Audio for that matter. Were there ever even 400 major titles available on either of those formats? Did DVD Audio or SACD sales ever even reach 0.1% of CD sales? BluRay, on the other hand, seems to be in a much better position as a *real* format.

@loosely: I guess you don't follow the news much? Several big studios have yet to announce their Blu-ray plans AT ALL, having just stopped producing for HD-DVD. Give it time; by the end of this year I'd suspect ALL new releases will be day and date with their DVD release, and more an more catalog titles will start getting released.
That said, for most catalog titles produced 10+ years ago, there's REALLY no point even releasing a Blu-ray. Other than to bilk consumers.

HD4ME: In case you didn't notice, the statistics are produced by Nielsen -- probably the most trusted source for this sort of information. If you, for some reason, think their methods aren't valid...well, maybe you could enlighten us on exactly why you think so AND tell us why it is that you think you know more about statistics than the leading statistics/ratings group on the planet.
So all that's left for you to complain about in any reasonable way is EngadgetHD's commentary...but if you don't like the writing, why would you even read it? Why visit EngadgetHD if you don't like it?
Finally, instead of saying it's all EngadgetHD BS, despite the fact that its really fairly straight forward and bereft of opinion, why don't you offer something to the conversation? Why don't you tell us why it's BS and what should be fixed about it? When doing so, however, try to leave your own likely biases at the door. Kthanks!
