Sony VP promises in-game XMB, NA video download service, PlayStation Cards in '08
It doesn't seem like those Sony firmware engineers will be a getting a break any time soon. With the PlayStation 3's v2.30 firmware and its DTS-HD MA / PS store upgrades barely settled Sony Senior VP Peter Dille jumped on the official PlayStation blog to let us know what the rest of 2008 has in store. In-game XMB? On the way this year, along with a video service that "separates the service from others you've seen or used...to give you the TV, movies and gaming content you want," and expanded community features. Also in store are PlayStation Cards (in $20 and $50 denominations) for the credit card-less among us. The four pillars of Sony's plan (community, free online gaming, digital media download services, and original content) hint towards the reasons we won't let the shiny beast get quite as dusty this year.

I'm surprised its taking Sony so long to get video downloads sorted out. The PS3 has had pretty robust crypto & DRM since the beginning to limit plays, duration of content so the pieces are already there in the client side. All that is missing is the actual delivery platform.
Maybe they intend to do a deal with Amazon or someone for their service. To me that would make more sense in some ways since it immediately gets them in the game and relieves Sony of the pressure of the contractual hell, QoS etc. that must come with movie downloads.

All the PS3 needs now is some games and I might buy one!

They're coming. Lots of good releases this year. Gotta love the free online community. That's mostly what turned me off the 360. I didn't want to be forced into paying a subscription again to use the online services like I was with my XB. This thing really is getting better (almost) by the week.

Wooooo, look's like I upset the fangirls today!
Sorry girls, but I beg to differ, when I look on the shelves , the amount of PS3 games available, and IMO, the type of games available compared to the 360 is woefully appalling and inadequate!
Stop being so defensive of your beloved toys and get your dic*s out of the BR drive, this might be a good piece of hardware now, but the game selection compared to EVERY other console is crap!

I get it, you called them girls when they're really guys. It's an insult, right? Awesome...what a clever, funny person you are.

I am worried about the Net Neutrality issue. Comcast and others are blocking and shaping traffic so bad that you cant get a 4 gig 720P movie very fast. I tried to get a 720P movie off of LIVE and it took a day to get it. I have a 6mb connection from Comcast.

Sweet. I just ordered a PS3 from Amazon yesterday and should be her today by 4pm. Can't wait to try this thing out. Will be selling my BDP-S300 to offset the cost.

I think PSN needs some chat like how it works on LIVE. It's a big hurdle that has to be crossed seemlessly. As I remember it, because I don't play online with my PS3, you have to literally get out of a game, like COD4, just to see if a friend is looking to play. It's not as painful on LIVE and that's a shame. I mean give me some anytime message check and chat features. Why not beat Microsoft in that regard by allowing unlimited private chat to boot. Anyhow it's a big deal with me, that and how developers treat PS3 users.
Could be Sony and or the PS3's PS network structure is horrible or they don't give as much attention because the money is currently over at 360 land. But seriously, I play my 360 more because things work a bit better when they shouldn't really. MGS4 is coming and I want to enjoy it without the hassle of trying to hook up with pals.
