1080p channels on the way, according to Tandberg CEO
Tandberg TV is preparing for the next big thing in broadcast HD - 1080p. According to CEO Eric Cooney, satellite providers are already preparing to offer full HD channels in the next few years to separate themselves from cable and IPTV competition with more limited bandwidth. Aside from the company's current projects rolling out MPEG-4, he sees 1080p/60Hz as an inevitable progression, with the hardware already in place. Three years from now, after switched digital's hit and fiber continues to expand its territory offering "Blu-ray quality movies" might be a great selling point for Dish and DirecTV, although we shudder to think what kind of DVR we'd need to store the programming.

1TB HDD's rolling out for DVR's?
FLskydiver @ Apr 16th 2008 5:52PM
I already have 2TB's attached to my DirecTV DVR. Probably would only hold 60 1080p movies, though (currently holds 200+ at 1080i).

With all the complaints about overcompression of satellite and cable signals, I can't imagine this is going to improve anything. The "resolution" they send could be 10,000 x 5,000 but if they're compressing it so much that it's macroblocking and smearing all over the place, what's the point?
How about you guys work to maximize the quality of your existing channels, before undertaking an "upgrade" that that improves nothing but your feature list?

You hit it dead on, Resolution has never really been the limiting factor for broadcasted image quality. Also, when are the writers here gonna stop using nonsensical terms like "Full HD". What next, desciptions like
"Improved betterness" and "Unobtainium"?

that is soo sick this is also going to influence 1080p buyers

It will never happen. Unless statelite wants to advertise that they now offer few HD channels than cable.

There's also broadcasters like TBS to consider -- what good is 1080p if the content is "The Brady Bunch" upconverted and stretched?
