RED keeps it coming with the RED RAY disk drive
RED's trifecta of hot new gear announcements at NAB wrapped up with the RED RAY optical disk drive, which promises to play back 4K video from the RED ONE, 3K video from the new Scarlet and the usual assortment of HD formats from RED Disc and RED Express media, as well as native R3D RAW files from CompactFlash. 5K video from the new EPIC isn't supported, though. As with all of RED's announcements today, specs are promised to change, but the clever name of the drive has us thinking that it's based on Blu-ray -- we'll keep digging for details.

Curious... but I still don't see why you wouldn't just be using portable HDD at this point? Optical media is still primarily a delivery format, not a terribly viable production format.

I think optical is still useful as an archival format. Removeability is still nice too, if the drive dies, get a new drive and still read your disks. If using hard drives to acquire footage, then I'd be most comfortable if drives were mirrored.

The RED team claims they can compress 2 hours of 4K footage plus 5.1 surround sound audio onto a DVD-9 and play it back on this new device. I call bullsh*t, but if their wavelet codecs are advanced enough, it might be possible. (It's impossible with DCT codecs like H.264)
