That's right, one of the biggest shows
still stuck in 480i is making the switch when it begins shooting this summer, as announced by Sony and CBS at NAB2008. Coming into its 17th season (to air in early 2009), it's the first CBS reality show to make the HD jump, via Sony's XDCAM production system. Executive producer Mark Burnett is calling it a "new era" for the show, we're calling it "about time". It's just a bit embarrassing that the Miss USA pageant made the jump first, but we won't complain about more HD footage from the beautiful locales
Survivor tends to visit. No word on how much that extra resolution will cost CBS, but with more people buying HDTVs everyday we don't see how they could afford not to.

OMFG. About time. I look forward to seeing the results next year. Too bad we have to suffer through another SD season before then.

Big Sam,
Did you really have to post that 4 times?
Everyone:
Yes, I am finally glad they are doing this in HD. It took them long enough, but those shots should look great in HD. Unfortunately, we have to wait until 2009 to see it!
why not the LS2LS7? @ Apr 13th 2008 11:28PM
Amazing Race in HD now please.
Oh, and fix the comment system, it's clear I'm not the only one it is messing up.

17 seasons already?!?! Damn, has it really been that many?

I thought starting with Survivor in China, this show should of been in HD. So many of the locales they film at are beautiful and would greatly benefit from HD. Now if CBS would film Amazing Race in HD we could all celebrate.

What Big Sam said was pretty much worth saying four times.

I still think Survivor should go somewhere really cold. I know it would never happen but maybe FOX would do a rip-off like that.

This is so very frustrating! Our local TW cable has HD for all the major networks EXCEPT CBS! That means the my first March Madness with my HDTV was in standard def, the Masters were in SD, and now Survivor will STILL be in SD for me (because it is, of course, all about me!).
I will try my best to be happy for the rest of you . . . Waaaahhhh!
Oh, no, I just realized that many of the NFL games are on CBS!

I think that the major hurdle up until now with Survivor in HD has been cost. Mark Burnett mentioned this a few years ago when he was asked if they were ever going to go HD. (If I remember correctly, he said they couldn't ever do it because of cost.) I mean, think about it. They have to record almost 24/7 for 39 days. That's a LOT of footage to produce....
Brian Kaempen @ Apr 15th 2008 6:56PM
@Kevin: Cost was probably a big issue, but I think logistics were an even bigger concern. Over the past two or three seasons, Survivor has added pinhole cameras throughout the courses, and until really tis year, tiny HD cameras haven't caught on. Now ESPN and FOX use tiny HD cams for racing which can easily be adapted for the harsh Survivor environments. Think of how much money Mark Burnett and CBS has and the relatively low cost of multi-TB RAIDS, that's why I don't think cost was the deciding factor. Either way, bring it on 2009!

You don't have to wait until 2009. Season 17 premiers this fall.

The Season 16 finale confirmed that the fall season will be in HD.
