Fiber is capable of supporting both analog and digital transmission, just like electromagnetic signals down a copper line.

Verizon FiOS sends three independent signals down the same fiber line, using three wavelengths (colors.) One for QAM download which is an analog/digital hybrid just like cable QAM. The second for IP uploads, and the third for IP downloads. The IP upload/download signals are fully digital.
