Verizon phasing out last analog channels, offering free digital adapter
You knew it was coming, but now Verizon's putting the rubber to the road with its effort to phase out the last remaining analog channels on FiOS TV. The carrier will tackle the phase out on a regional basis, starting with New York on April 21st. Those affected should have already received notification of the impending change, as Verizon will be doling out free digital adapters to keep said customers from pulling their hair out in frustration. Of course, it's not missing the chance to offer up more sophisticated set-tops to these very folks in hopes of coaxing them into bigger, clearer packages, but it's not like we're going to argue with Verizon trying to up the HD adoption rate around here.

When comcast does this I may die of a heart attack.

Enjoy your wait 'til 2012 then.
You can thank the FCC for that.

Verizon offered analog channels? How? True analog isn't possible over fiber AFAIK, so what does this mean, exactly?
pji @ Apr 8th 2008 11:40AM
Is a fiber strand analog or digital? The answer is no, it is just a transport medium. No equipment manufacturer in their right mind would create a device that uses analog directly over fiber so it is all packaged in a digital transport and split by the equipment (NIU) installed at your house.
I think they're just removing a service that few people knew about, or used, anyway.

Fiber is capable of supporting both analog and digital transmission, just like electromagnetic signals down a copper line.
Verizon FiOS sends three independent signals down the same fiber line, using three wavelengths (colors.) One for QAM download which is an analog/digital hybrid just like cable QAM. The second for IP uploads, and the third for IP downloads. The IP upload/download signals are fully digital.

When i use a spare tv that does not have a cablebox (ie i will use their digital adapter), does anybody know if you can still control the channels through the television (and it's remote), or do you need a remote for their digital adapter or do you have to turn the adapter channels by hand? i cant find it anywhere...
csp @ May 14th 2008 6:03AM
The Verizon adapter uses the same remote as the other Motorola devices. It also comes with said remote. You will not be able to use your TV to change channels; however, you will have access to ALL of the channels you currently subscribe to, including movie channels. The only things you won't have are VOD and the IMG.

I just got off the phone with Verizon, because I just got the letter from them that I need the digital converter box on 2 of my TV's.Yes,they are giving up to 3 converter boxes to all FiOS customers. They are even coming to my home to install them for me for free tommorrw. They do have a remote with them and they told me each box will get all the channels I get with my settop box, plus all my movie Channels. Thats amazing cause when I had FiOS installed it was $4.99 a box,so I only got one. They said the goverment is making them do this. The number on the letter they just sent me,that you all need to call is 1-888-463-4448.Thats direct to digital box program and only waited 16 seconds for a human. He was very nice and helpful and will have it done for me tommorrw. Hope this helps everyone!

Well,Verizon just left, and I couldn't be happier!!! My old TVs now have a picture that is almost as good as the new TV,with the Verizon set top box! Also those TVs now get every channel I get on the Set top box, plus my 50+ movie package channels!! My Grandkids will be thrilled. At 1st one of the TVs wouldn't get color and the Tech tried everything. It turned out to be the TV,cause it was old and he had to reset the color setting on the TV.It's perfect now. The Tech said to make sure I tell everyone, this is for people who already have Verizon FiOs TV,who don't have a set top box on every TV.Verizon will give you FREE,up to 3 more boxes. And this is fro a limited time....sor hurry and call them. The number again is,1-888-463-4448.Thats direct to the Digital converter free box program. No wait at all,but I'm sure it will get busier as people start calling now. Good luck everyone!

Check your bill carefully! I just got charged about $3.50 a piece for 1 month for the 'free' adapters!
LLBwwb @ Jun 27th 2008 6:07PM
Just wanted to let you all know,I've received my next bill since Verizon installed the free digital adapters for me and yes they are FREE. Verizon promised there would never be a charge for the free adapters and so far they have kept that promise. They have kept all promises they have made me as I just received my free HDLCD-TV from them too.
