Not quite true. PS1 titles play on every PS3. PS2 backwards compatibility varies by model. 60Gb features full hardware BC, 80Gb features partial hardware BC (which is still extremely good), the 40Gb has no PS2 hardware at all. So at present there is no BC in the 40Gb model.
However it seems likely that Sony will want to sell PS2 titles as downloads at some point so it seems like that some form of BC will eventually appear. I doubt it will be comprehensive as the other models.
Anyway, if BC is important, get an 80Gb model while you still can. Otherwise hang onto your PS2.
