I'm not sure we're there yet. I've seen a couple IMAX 3D movies using the polarized glasses, and they are much better than old-school 3D, but I'm not sure if I'd want to watch all my movies that way. I have not been at the very latest and greatest 3D cinemas yet, so it remains to be seen if they've got this fine-tuned enough to provide a crisp clean 3D image that doesn't induce headaches.

Bill

Comments on Can 3D cinemas really take off?

No, the latest 3D revival is just another fad. Most theaters that are installing at least one digital projector at one of their screens is then 3d capable. I know Carmike installed thousands of theaters with 3d projection systems for the release of Beowulf.

I saw Beowulf in 3d at a local rinky dink run down theater and it was a great experience (except for the fact that either the glasses were put together backwards or something was screwed up in the projection because it required wearing them upside down in order to get the proper effect.)

Now, what I would like to see is someone offering good quality glasses for purchase that are comfortable to wear and have better optics than the disposable ones that they hand out at the box office.

bull3964

Comments on Can 3D cinemas really take off?

Kill the glasses, and it might be worth a try. Call me crazy, but theaters need to also go "nextgen" for a true worthwhile moviegoing experience. Updated sound, everything. Lets get the people back into the theaters with some "new tech" worthy of the cost of a blockbuster movie ticket. At least it would help make some of the crap coming out of Hollywood lately, a little more bearable and justify leaving my HDTV to going to the local overpriced cinemaplex. I want options, and having an option to switch between 2D and 3D would be great. Because it doesn't matter how great 3D is, I don't want to watch milk and car commercials in 3D, period. Some movies and shows, yes, but not all the time. There is such a thing as having too much of a good thing. So it's like 120hz LCD 3D effect, it's great, butn I don't want it all the time. It made an otherwise boring Beowulf into something far more visually interesting than it ever could have been otherwise. I would love to see something like the Lord of the Rings trilogy or starwars or any good action movie in the new 3d tech because it's just that good. No eye fatigue, no distorted images, no gimmicky hand in your face 3d. It gives the picture real depth and when they want to throw a gimmicky hand in your face scene at you, it's far better than the old stuff ever dreamt of being!

jsn

Comments on Can 3D cinemas really take off?

I saw a demo of the battle scene from the opening of Sith in 3D that was created from a 2D master.
