I do this mostly because if something is wrong with the TV. I want to be able to take it right back to the store and get a new one. Instant gratification. I have found, though, that HH Gregg will sometimes honor an online price (though this seems dependent on the sales person rather than it being store policy).
I dispise Best Buy's (lack of) customer service. Having previously worked there in the service department (thankfully before the "geek squad")I hate hearing about the protection plan that just pads their wallets. A word of warning to the world, read the pamphlet before saying sure. If a sales rep says, "it covers everything" call him/her on it, get it in writing from them and have the store General Manager sign it. This practice is especially bad for laptop sales.
I went through Circuit City's phone option and had a reasonable experience, though i did get several calls after the fact that went something like "we noticed you do not have the extended warranty.." Also, my limited experience with CC has shown that I can generally get a good deal if you are willing to wait for the right time. I got a 46" samsung (I believe it is the 4671, but it could be the 4665... which ever has the 120hz engine feature) for 2300 that is currently listed for 3200(4671) or 2400(4665).

Joe

Comments on Price still swaying decisions of HDTV buyers

What is the best place to buy HDTV's online? The first time, the TV was $300 cheaper than my local Best Buy's sale price. I actually saved more because there was no tax on the $1,900 I paid online. Free shipping makes it even better. The second time, I saved $500 prior off the same TV at Best Buy's sale price. Ever since I've discovered Vanns, I will never buy a TV from a B&M again. Why throw money out the window? There are always better deals online but - word to the wise - do your research on the vendor first to ensure you are dealing w/ a reputable company. When I bought my 40" Sony XBR3, I shopped Best Buy against Circuit City and vice versa. I made my decision on a Saturday night to go with CC but the next morning's Sunday ad had the same TV at BB for $150 less. I took the ad to CC and they REFUSED to match it since my order was placed, though I hadn't taken delivery. I canselled the order on on the way down the street, I stopped at a higher end retailer called Flanners. Not only did they BEAT the BB price, but I got 2 years free financing, an upgraded warranty and great discounts on HDMI cables, DVD player and stand. I had always assumed that because of their reputation for great service, the prices would be higher. Not so. (And no, I do not work there or have any relatives that do either.) I know there are places all over the country like this and don't just blow by them if your main priority is lowest price, you might be pleasantly surprised.

DJ

Comments on Price still swaying decisions of HDTV buyers

I was very happy with the Vizio I got at Costco. Price was the major point, but their 90-day or whatever instore warranty is very handy should anything go wrong. Whenever I hunt down a nicer tv I'll probably order from newegg.com. Whether it was a crack in the frame or outright failure, getting it from the local store is less likely to be like that.
2) I love getting things at best buy cause for a 170 bucks ( i know it sounds alot when u dont need it but when u do its not) for the extended service plan. Ive already used it once. When my tv failed, i simply braught it to the store and they gave me a new one. No fuss no muss. No finding boxes to ship it with...no waiting weeks/months to get it back from the manufacturer ...instant gratification. Maybe not to others but that is worth the little extra premium for a local buy.

Ali

Comments on Price still swaying decisions of HDTV buyers

found the best price (from a reputable place) on Amazon. They used "Eagle White-glove" deliver, where they help take the tv out of the box, hook it up, make sure it works (and you're happy with it) and they'll even take away the waste (styrofoam and box) if you wish.

It makes it easier if theres an issue (bad clouding, cracked screen) because they're already there to take it back if its faulty.

I couldn't find my Sony Bravia 46v3000 at walmart, and i didn't trust the alternative model numbering at costco. I have purchased more than one flat pannel and Best buy made it much easier to buy from them than at Costco. At least I ended up with the panels that I was interested in than the ones that were displayed at Costco. So far to date, i have not been able to find the panels I bought at a price that even comes close to BestBuy's (in store or even online). That tell you that price was a concern to me as well as the brand and model. They made sure that i don't need to go back to Costco and their after sales follow-up and help is by far better than teh rest. Forget Circuit City, I swore to never shop there and that is because of their bad pre-sales help and I could only imagine how it would be after.

hfva

Comments on Price still swaying decisions of HDTV buyers

The online tax is a state tax , due only if the online store is based in your home state . Sure B&M is more expensive if your looing at list prices, but who buys a $3000 hdtv for whats its listed at? Its all about barganing for a lower price. It can be done everywhere with hdtvs. Ive helped lots of people I know buy their hdtvs by bargining for a lower price. Buying an hdtv is a game. Buying an hdtv at list price is stupidity. Play the game and save yourself big money. Tip, head to a store were they work off commission, much easier to get your goal. Oh and dont just settle and take no for an answer.
