I think the obvious reason for their purchase is to provide a back channel for communication with their settop boxes. One of satelite's biggest problems is getting consumers to connect their set top box to a phone line. A small sliver of spectrum is all it would take to locate every receiver in the country, keep track of pay per view sales and monitor viewer habits (think Nielsons on steroids).
