LG sells a combo burner on newegg for 229.

The $229 "burner" that you're referring to on Newegg is only a DVD burner, though it does play BDs and HD-DVDs. There is a version that adds BD-R for only $50 more, though, at Nowdirect.com.
I think it's pretty well known that Plextor overcharges.

Well, I have a Panasonic Blu-ray burner that I paid 400$ on eBay and an XBOX 360 HD DVD drive that I got for 50$ at Best Buy. I can rip both formats and burn to Blu-ray for 450$. So 599$ seems a bit on the high side.
