Jeremy Kipnis sez dream home theater can be had for $60,000
We know, not just anyone can afford to drop $6 million on a new home theater (not to mention a new home to house it in), but the mastermind of the utterly extravagant Kipnis Studio Standard has reportedly suggested that folks need only spend one percent of that in order to enjoy the same HT bliss (almost). For just $60,000, Mr. Kipnis suggests that movie aficionados can enjoy a top shelf home theater experience, and curiously enough, he doesn't even make mention of exactly what brands / models are needed (save for the pricey JVC DLA-RS2 projector). Instead, he lays out a laundry list of guidelines that primarily deal with placement and arrangement. Curious to know more? Tag the read link below -- just don't be too surprised to see that most of the work is still on you (including keeping things within budget).

Schweet! Now I just need to save....Aww MAN!!!
Yubastard @ Mar 22nd 2008 2:40PM
damn... well, half of that goes to that 103 inch Panasonic plasma... $15k goes to speakers and $15k in equipment (including Playstation 3 and my Xbox360) and cables... yeah, that sounds good...
CRiccio @ Mar 22nd 2008 3:03PM
In the world of home theater, nobody uses flat panel/RP TV's. Its all front projection. Those giant plasmas are for people with more money then brains/class.

in the world of home theater, my dumb friend, it's all about watching a good picture and listening to a good sound. If I'm gonna spend $30k in a tv or projector, might as well buy something I can see in daylight, too.
I ain't buying stuff just because in the world of home theater people buy it. That's just stupid and brainless. I don't follow trends, I do research and buy what I need.

If your going to recommend and rant about a product, at least know the PRICE!! The cost of the 103" Plasma is $70K more than the entire $60K budget, not $15K like you imply!! Front PJ like the other poster said...

"If I'm gonna spend $30k in a tv or projector, might as well buy something I can see in daylight, too."
If you're spending $30k on a tv or projector, I'm /pretty/ sure you're going to be able to afford a separate room to put it in. Light will not be an issue.
And as everyone else has said, a gigantic plasma/LCD is just silly... it's a home theater, not a home stadium. You're not looking to buy a jumbotron here. You'll get a way better piece of equipment for $30k if you buy a projector than a TV.

brilliant, acoustic tuned room and equipment equals good home theater? Gods, why didn't someone tell me this before! And here I thought it was all about letting Bose acoustic wave super magic 2500s do all the hardwork.

I don't know how valuable can the advice of a man who puts tube amps in front of his speakers can be. Especially in the delicate matter of placement and arrangement.

Wow, his guidelines are a lot more intelligent than his $6M silliness. They are pretty much spot on.
Of course, the $6M silliness (which probably takes into account buying the land and the rest of the mansion it sits on) was just a smart publicity stunt that EVERY home entertainment media outlet swallowed hook, line, and sinker -- getting Kipnis more free advertising for his new business than he could have bought with whatever he actually spent on his own home theater (nice tax write-off/business expense!).

"Jeremy Kipnis sez dream home theater can be had for $60,000"
Really? 'sez'?
locke6854 @ Mar 24th 2008 8:57AM
Kipnis didn't impress me... i still don't know why he's got those vibration sensitive tub amps IN FRONT of the speakers...
Also-- ideally one sub per speaker? 2k projector resolution minimum? In the comments for the original article, someone mentioned this was overkill even for the audio mixing studios that MAKE the movies.
Apparently, the original 8 subs sounded "really good" but didn't deliver what he wanted, so he upped it to 16 subs.
A favorite quote- "Fools and their money are soon parted." /rant

60k, Damn I wish someone would have told me that before I dropped 250k on my system. Now, that I think about it, I did not get just a home Theatre, I got a whole House sytem. Eight Room, Theatre, Library, and Studies. I got a steal.

What a hot set up. So real you jump out of your skin. Picture makes you think you are right there. Sound sits with you. I wish I had that kind of bucks. 6 million is nothing for the right buyer.

I wonder which one of you is going to call Ferrari
and tell them they don't know anything about building race cars...
