Canon dumps rear projection development, focused on SED
Canon is apparently the latest in a veritable slew of companies jumping off the RPTV ship, according to Japan's Corporate News. While the end of its development of rear projection technology is no surprise at this point, this may bode well for the long, long awaited SED technology. Even with Canon's Hitachi/Panasonic flat panel tie-up, its still working on getting its surface-conduction electron-emitter display to the people, and with the promise of 100,000:1 contrast ratios, we're still hoping they do.[Via TV Snob]

more SED news to ignore

And why ignore what is one of the most promising technologies for future TVs ? Because it's late ? Come on... How many years have we waited for the first OLED TV ?

So if I understand correctly, they are getting out of the TV business that they never got into in the first place, and oh yeah, some moronic company is still suing them over SED technology that could have been great but will never see the light of day.
So cannon is still making cameras and printers like always.
Where's the news here?

i want to believe in SED, as much as i believe in OLED. But i need to see some physical evidence of it real soon. After all, I'm an atheist, and i don't make decisions based on beliefs, but on hard facts.
From what i understand of the manufacturing process, SED should be able to be relatively inexpensive to mass produce, given an acceptably low DOA rate.

Already, old technology. OLED is superior in everyway and is already available (although limited in size) at your local Sony Store. OLED will be the dominating FP device in the next 2-3 years.
