Onkyo unveils TX-SR576 and TX-SR506 receivers
Let's face it, not everyone has a cool grand to drop on a new AV receiver, but Onkyo's looking out for the low- to mid-rangers out there with a nicely equipped duo each sporting a price tag under five bills. Both the $379 TX-SR506 and $479 TX-SR576 feature 32-bit DSP processing, 192 kHz / 24-bit digital-to-analog converters on all channels, 7.1-channel processing for Dolby Digital EX, Dolby ProLogic IIx, DTS-ES, DTS 96/24, and DTS Neo:6, support for the firm's Remote Interactive iPod dock / charger models, the Audyssey 2EQ automatic calibration system and Onkyo's dual-source Powered Zone 2 capability, which allows the receiver's rear surround amplifier channels to power stereo speakers in a second room while still listening to 5.1-channel sound in the main zone. Each unit also touts a trio of HDMI inputs, optical / coaxial digital audio ports and at least 75-watts per channel. For more details on the pair, hit up the read link below.

I would expect low sales for both models. The street price for an Onkyo 605 is $399, which gets you built-in decoders for all the new audio codecs. Why would you pay roughly the same price for one of these?

No way I would buy a receiver today without the new decoding in it. Those are not exactly bargain MSRP's.

new HD audio formats aside, the million dollar question is will it actually pass hdmi audio though, or only for video switching?
shawnmos @ Mar 19th 2008 12:32AM
I'm sure it'll pass audio, but unless you have a player which can decode all of the next gen audio codecs it doesn't really matter.
comineeyeaha @ Mar 19th 2008 3:36PM
It actually can be quite the irritant not being able to pass audio through the HDMI on the receiver. I have the HT-SR800 and if I was digital audio I have to have the HDMI and a separate audio connection. It makes things sorta messy back there, and also it will make it more difficult for the less tech savvy to have everything configured correctly.

There are other x06 models coming out... AVS had a post mentioning the 606 as well.

According to the detailed specifications outlined via other websites and news articles, the NEW Onkyo TX-SR576 does appear to handle the new audio codecs that the Blu-Ray 2.0 players (soon to be released on the market per Sony) will have has a feature. That being said, this Onkyo unit will handle the said audio codec found in most of the Toshiba HD DVD players that are still being used. Onkyo's USA website has all the specs for this and the other new 505 unit..check it out. This unit, however, looks like a winner. Let's hope there are no heating issues with both units..heck, these may be the replacements for the 605 and 705 units that most say run very HOT.
AwesomeTown @ Mar 19th 2008 7:32AM
I have a 605, it does run warm, but I wouldn't say hot. Compared to other similar recievers, then maybe, but I wouldn't know. I got a good 4-5 inches of space above it, so that probably helps.

Seriously, why won't anyone release a legacy-free, thin receiver?
I want one with maybe 3 full-featured HDMI ports and maybe a couple digital audio ports, and that's IT!

The only new thing about these are the dynamic range expanders for mp3s. That is either valuable or worthless.
