20% of US households will spend stimulus funds on consumer electronics
Forget income tax rebate checks -- what are you doing with that bonus that should be arriving between May and August of this year? Apparently, 1 in 5 of you will be spending at least a portion of your economic stimulus rebate check on consumer electronics. Granted, this "research" was dug up and put out by the Consumer Electronics Association, but all in all, it actually sounds about right. After all, shipments for flat-panels have already been on the rise this year despite a softening economy, and according to the CEA, "computers, televisions and mobile phones" are the items most likely to be targeted. More specifically, some 39-percent will purportedly use their extra income on a TV, but for their own sake, we certainly hope they set aside enough to purchase HD service to go along with it.

Too bad buying consumer electronics wont stimulate our economy. It'll stimulate Japans and Chinas, but certainly not ours. Thanks guys.
John B @ Mar 15th 2008 7:15PM
Not entirely true. If you're buying it from American retailers, they will be able to get a bit of it, and of course they were likely sent via American truck drivers who loaded up at American warehouses, which were in turn loaded up from American ports.
But in principle I agree. I'd love to see an American electronics company again. :(

Is that a stimulus package in your pocket or you just happy to see me?
Go Hyper Inflation!!!! Stupid bush.
Americans have sold out thier country for $600. While the very wealthy probably get back $6,000,000.
Enjoy your pennies.
John B @ Mar 16th 2008 3:07PM
WTF? Who said anything about "selling out"? News flash, Sparky: That's OUR money that the U.S. government legally steals from our paychecks.
I'd MUCH rather have it go back into the hands of the PEOPLE who are the true owners of it than to bullshit projects like Alaskan bridges to nowhere, paying farmers to NOT farm their fields when we have starvation all over the world, or going into the back pockets of those jackasses in Washington that we call our "legislators".
So, shut up. If you don't want to be considered as a sell out and if you're just going to bitch about it, then GIVE ME YOUR CHECK. I'll stimulate the economy for you in proxy.
ishism @ Mar 17th 2008 3:54AM
Hit a nerve there marvin? I don't know about Alaska but, I'll definately spend that cash on a new toy.
John B @ Mar 17th 2008 8:06AM
No. I'm sick of the bullshit class warfare that I see on EngadgetHD. First we have to deal with BD fanboys saying that if you don't spend $500 or more on a BD player then you need to get a better job or else you're a "true" home theatre enthusiast. Now we have you initiating class warfare about how we get $600 but the rich get $6 mil.
Talk about ungrateful...
GhostDoggy @ Mar 15th 2008 6:27PM
And the rest will spend it on beer, smokes, and eating out.
Galley @ Mar 15th 2008 8:08PM
I'm paying off some furniture before the interest kicks in. That's OK, I already have a PS3 and HDTV.
Bradley @ Mar 15th 2008 8:23PM
Yeah my wife and I were already planning on buying a second HDTV so we decided we would wait until we get our checks. We originally were just looking at a 32" around $600 since it's main purpose will be as a picture frame but with the rebate checks we plan on spending more and hopefully have a enough left over that we will be able to pay someone else to mount it on the wall.
venk @ Mar 15th 2008 10:51PM
Save it. Sorry G Dub, I'm not going to help the economy by spending the money you borrowed from China.
Montusama @ Mar 16th 2008 1:11AM
If I got it now, I would of spent it on a higher budget for my computer, but I'm not even sure I'll get one, which I don't really care, it will probably go towards either somethign computer related (maybe a nice HD monitor?...or even a car (assuming I get off my lazy ass and get a permit) but I'll decide when I get it
Consumer Electronics? me? No.....Real Electronics? Yes
Double J @ Mar 16th 2008 1:20AM
I'm spending mine towards a 150cc scooter to help fight the future of $4g gas. Im already hooked up with the ps3 and HDTV.
ishism @ Mar 16th 2008 12:00PM
$4 dollars?? Why stop there? Why not make it $10. It's not like the nation state is has the balls to regulate these monopolies. FDR policy, is what we need. NOW!!
superklye @ Mar 17th 2008 9:44AM
I thinking about either spending it on the Panasonic DMP-BD50K or a trip to Vegas.
Blu-ray or strippers...hmmm...
dshan @ Mar 24th 2008 8:51AM
possible... but its really not a lot of money when you get down to it. I'm kinda hoping more people will make a mortgage or credit card payment or save it. .... and in my opinion, giving this money to people hoping they'll piss it away on the foundering economy is a pretty crappy idea... give everyone a 5 or 10 year savings bond instead... but the Govt wants most people will blow the cash rather than save it
