Now that all studios can focus their efforts on cranking out titles for a single format (well,
almost), it's no surprise to hear that Warner is already planning a few special sets for the hordes of collectors out there. Early reports are suggesting that the aforementioned firm will debut a series of "book-like" Blu-ray packages on March 25th with the unveiling of
Bonnie & Clyde. Apparently, at least nine other films will follow suit, offering movie buffs a "handsomely bound volume containing rare and never-before-seen archival material." As for exact titles, we're hearing that
Dirty Harry,
Woodstock,
Gone with the Wind and
North by Northwest could be among those chosen (no
Matrix?), but Warner could re-release hits such as
Blade Runner and certain
Harry Potter selections as well. Interestingly, it seems as if HD DVD followers will also
get the chance to indulge with the red release of
Bonnie & Clyde, but there's been nothing said officially either way just yet.

As a habitual movie collector I think I prefer the single cases to boxed sets. Boxed sets just screw up my shelves, especially the "clever" ones with peculiar shapes.

Hear hear. I can't stand these boxes. Sell them with an accompanying booklet or something if you want, but none of these silly fold out boxes with the disc holders glued to them. The BD box is great and works fine.

I believe you have the wrong photo. The ones I have seen look like regular books. In fact, they are marketing them as "coffee table books", although they appear to be not much larger than a BD case.

If these books fit on a DVD-case-sized shelf, then I'm fine with them. Truth is, I tend to store my discs in little plastic sleeves in drawers sized for CD cases, and put all the boxes in storage... but with these books I could put them on a shelf, I guess.
What I really like is that Warner is still taking hte lead with nice catalog title releases, which are most of what I have been buying on Blu-Ray.... what few there have been, that is.
Keep up the good work WB, and step up the pace!

The North by Nortwest one will be a must-buy for me. Here's hoping Casablanca and Wizard of Oz are on tap as well.
I don't mind movies like these having unique packaging- I keep a separate shelf for boxed sets and collector's editions of favorite movies.
