Anyone enjoying the
iTunes Digital Copy included on some Fox DVD / Blu-ray releases will be happy to hear Lionsgate is jumping on the bandwagon as well, starting with its releases of
Rambo and
The Eye. The usual requirements of an
iTunes account apply, and the file should work on authorized computers, iPods, iPhones and Apple TVs. We haven't grabbed one of these discs ourselves just yet, anyone want to let us know how well your rights are being managed by Apple (and whatever happened to
Managed Copy)?

Retarded. I dropped iTunes for the (IMO) better Zune platform. If they want to stop pirates they need to know what DRM is not the way to do it. DRM only punishes those who don't abuse the system. And those who do abuse the system will just find a way around the DRM. No thanks says I.

Um... isn't the Microsoft store through Zune protected by DRM as well though? How does using Zune software change anything?
Besides, iTunes does offer it's "Plus" files, which actually sound really good and are DRM free. True though, they don't offer a video version yet.

Uhm.. I don't want iTunes-crap on my computer, so this is completely useless..

The recent release of "Resident Evil-Extinction" came with a digital copy. Just yesterday Hitman on BD has a digital copy. So this nothing new, besides, who would want to watch a movie on an ipod? The screen is ridiculous. Get a PSP at least and save your eyes.
DrXym @ Mar 12th 2008 6:26AM
How the hell are you meant to transfer the file from the Blu Ray disc to the iPod? Besides, mandatory managed copy is supposedly arriving at some point, so why are they even doing this?
Geoffrey Sperl @ Mar 12th 2008 8:05AM
No. Digital Copy is NOT tied to iTunes. How many times does this have to be reiterated?
I own the Family Guy: Blue Harvest DVD and Digital Copy comes with WMP and iTunes capability. In fact, the Mac users can't even use the Digital Copy disc (yes, it is a separate DVD, which means the main release can be on Blu-Ray) and have to just download the entire file from the iTMS.
I suggest, Richard, that you guys send an intern down to Target or Best Buy and pick up one of those releases so you know how the system works.
John Anderson @ Mar 12th 2008 12:10PM
That is incorrect. I bought Blue Harvest, and the Digital Copy worked out of the box with no problems at all on my Macbook.
Geoffrey Sperl @ Mar 12th 2008 1:39PM
@John Anderson: Sorry to be contrary, but it's correct for me at least. I just double-checked my Blue Harvest disc and there is a code for downloading the the episode from the iTMS. Even the Digital Copy disc points me to the iTMS front page for Blue Harvest.
You put the DC disc in your MacBook and it opened in iTunes and put the episode in there?

I got the Family Guy DVD a few months ago, and it works great. I have it on my PC, Apple TV, and iPod. Biggest plus is the ease of downloading and speed. Its not something I'd use much (I agree with TorontoGuy- If you're buying a frickin' Blu-ray Disc, why are you going to watch low res video on a 1" screen), but this is great for people who are not really saavy enough to rip their DVDs and reencode them for their portable device.
TorontoGuy @ Mar 13th 2008 12:53PM
Yes, I may have a 60" plasma at home but when I really want to impress the guys there is nothing like a hefty 1.5" ipod screen to watch the latest action film.
mcrexx @ Mar 12th 2008 10:55AM
I'd rather get a separate copy of the movie on DVD instead of this DRM infested itunes disc crap.
EatingPie @ Mar 12th 2008 12:36PM
Lessee.
Blu-Ray sucks because you can't transfer movies to other formats.
Now Blu-Ray allows it with Digital Copy, but that sucks too because it is "tied to iTunes" (untrue) or requires something less than HDTV to play (teeny tiny iPod/iPhone).
There is no satisfying people on the Internet. Sheesh.

The Internets is never satisfied. Rather than trying to make everybody happy, it's best to please enough to keep you in business.

To clear things up... here's what you can do with the fox and (am guessing) lionsgate titles...
on a mac:
you put the disc in and it launches iTunes, you enter the code in the iTunes store, and it copies the movie off the disc into your library. You dont download it from online. You have same usage rights as you do with any other (non-"plus") media downloaded from the iTunes store. For the record Family Guy is 640x480 @ 1.5mbps
in windows:
1. option for the same iTunes experience that the mac has.
2. option to copy a windows media (DRM'd) file for PC playback or transfer to you personal media players that support wmv-drm files.
"Managed Copy" as far as I know is still a long ways away from being a reality, so this does provide a nice interim solution for those with compatible devices. In my opinion it provides a nice slick and easy option for the "majority" of iPod/iPhone/AppleTV users who likely have no clue what Handbrake or similar ripper is.
also to TorontoGuy - check you specs, the latest iPods and iPhones have a higher resolution screen than your PSP.
