Those shows are awesome.. I've only seen them on cable and they looked fantastic.. I'd imagine the HDM versions would have much much better PQ. I might pick them up!

Planet Earth was great (the BBC version, anyway). I think I paid $54.99 for the BD set on sale, and it was worth it to me. If you're tempted to pick up the HD DVDs, though, bear in mind that once your player eventually breaks you might never be able to view it again.

Just to let you all know, that isnt the original BBC Planet Earth. I think the only difference anyways was that it had a new narrator.

The BBC narrator is Sir David Attenborough, and the Discovery Channel version narrator is Sigourney Weaver. As for the other difference, I know there was some confusion, but I *believe* the final determination was that the Discovery Channel version is encoded at 1080i, while the BBC version is 1080p. I have the BBC version myself.

That is really stupid. (Fortunately, I have the BBC version.) Did the Discovery Channel ever explain why they bothered to have an American-voice overdub? It's not like Sir Attenborough is difficult to understand.

Getting a rock bottom cheap HD DVD player and buying all these firesales could really save alot of money. The players still play DVD, so its actually a really good deal to save money on movies 2 to 3x the price.

I've been buying up $9.99-$14.99 HD titles everywhere, at that price they re cheaper than the equivalent DVDs, my HD library has doubled in the last few weeks.
When there all gone I'll go back to DVD until BR has a quality player at the right price, I think it might be a long wait, so I'll enjoy my very cheap HD DVD discs played on my excellent XA2 in the mean time.

Sir David Attenborough was actually talking about something that he knows about and cares about rather than just reading a script like Sigourney Weaver was. It shows. The difference between the different narrators is huge. Also, it's nice having extra footage.

FYI: A friend of mine cashed in on this deal and his discs were covered in random patches of a material similar to white-out tape. He called Discovery and they sent him a new set, free of charge and he could keep the old ones.

Has anyone seen the other two shows? If they're any good, I'll definitely grab them. (other ones besides Planet Earth that is)
As and aside; now THIS is a firesale. 10 bucks is a sale. that fake best buy 25 dollar "sale" was a joke.

(and for the whing Blu-ray trolls the answer to your doomsday warnings about HD DVD players dying is simple & easy.
Players are so cheap now you just buy another one to tuck away.
That's got to be the next 10 years covered......easily.

......now all you have to worry - as in real and genuine worry - about is 2 things.
1) whether Blu-ray will fail to escape the niche and die off early too and
2) how limited is the PS3 laser lifespan when you use the PS3 for games and as your video player.
I wouldn't be so smug about it all if I were you.)
