Sony bids adieu to Trinitron CRT sets

Just months after Sony hauled its RPTV production business off to the graveyard, the firm is now bidding a fond farewell to the Trinitron CRT. Believe it or not, the first Trinitron became a reality in 1968, and here we are some 40 years later shedding a tear as LCDs and OLED displays steal the thunder. Reportedly, the firm has moved some 280 million units worldwide between televisions and computer monitors, but we suppose all good things must eventually come to an end. So long, Trinitron -- it's been a mighty impressive run.

And the saddest thing of all is they still produce better pictures than any current tech (I am not including OLED as current)

Perhaps, but I wouldn't mind trading my 34XBR970 for a 42"+ LCD. I bought it because it is a pretty decent cost/benefit ratio. And I can laugh in the face of upscaling.

i know il miss you trinitron :( but i wont forget you. i have one at home! you wont be forgotten! least of all by me! (until i can afford an lcd & oled):D hehe

Made sure to get one as my first HDTV just before they started disappearing. Still the highest quality thing we use professionally too. Sad to see them go...

i really hope this means that sony will ramp up support, Research and development for oled and release sets for a decent size (52"), price($3-4k usd), and form factor in the not too distant future (2010-2012). 50"-70", lossless audio, 1080p 120hz, and 10,000,000:1 contrast ratios in the reach of the avrage consumer anyone?

Yes, that's very sad, especially when knowing that all current technologies are inferior. But the margins are so much better on LCDs, the move by Sony is very understandable.
I've seen the OLED tv and yes, this is the future. Let's hope they will find a way to make it bigger and cheaper. And also that Toshiba will bring back their attention to that other promising technology, SED.
