Samsung's fourth-generation Blu-ray player will be hitting store shelves slightly sooner than expected elsewhere, as the company announced during its
CeBIT press conference that worldwide release will happen in April, rather May as
previously announced at CES. The BD-P1500 updates the well-received
BD-P1400 player with
Profile 1.1 / Bonus View goodness, as well as 7.1 PCM, Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD, and DTS-HD MA audio support for $399. Pick up one of these up next month, or wait for the BD-Live enabled
DMP-BD50 or
BDP-S550? For those in need of legacy HD DVD support, still word whether the BD-UP5500 combo player's release date has been affected by Samsung's "
focus" on Blu-ray.
Update 3/11: Samsung PR dropped us a line that the BD-P1500 is still officially expected in the May/June timeframe. We'll keep you posted on any further updates.

Is there some sort of rule that requires all Blu-ray players to look butt-ugly?
TrentD @ Mar 3rd 2008 9:50AM
They can't spell "Blue", so how do you expect them to design anything well either? :)
Actually, I like several of the Sony players' appearance.

Are you serious?
Samsung has some of the prettiest Bluray Players out there IMO...this one is pretty nice. Simple and easy to view/understand.
The sony ones are the butt ugly ones. I like the Sharp players as well.

Matter of personal taste I guess. I can't wait to buy this player. Will look great matching up w/ my glossy black Samsung LCD. I think it looks rather sharp.
Not that YOU should - beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

I don't understand why Samsuung is releasing a profile 1.1 player when 2.0 players will be out in the summer. They should just ditch this and go for a 2.0 player. Consumers don't need to be stuck in the same situation as 1.0 going to 1.1.
CassilineKnight @ Mar 3rd 2008 10:01AM
I completely agree...at this point this is a waste of money all around. I'd just stop prdouction immediately and reuse the parts for the 2.0 players...
And I hope people don't act surprised when Samsung decides to NOT release the Combo player...that ship has long sailed now that HD DVD is dead.+
Doc @ Mar 3rd 2008 10:07AM
Agreed, it's a waste of my cash until they roll out a 2.0 version. That and I'll wait til the players drop just a bit more in price.

This little guy has been made to compete with the panny BD-30K it seems. At $399 MSRP at launch (probably found around $349 retail), expect to see it plunge in price when the Sony S-350 arrives (1.1 at launch, but already anounced as 2.0 upgradeable) this summer.
Should be interesting to see the battle between this guy and The panny, although I can't imagine for he life of me why Samsung would put an ehternet port in this and not make it upgradeable to 2.0. (or maybe ... We need to know if there is some kind of memory or USB port in this).

I'm just looking forward to next year, when all new models will be BD-Live, and we can finally quit agonizing over the profile issue once and for all.
shawnmos @ Mar 3rd 2008 1:02PM
Wow, why did they change the look? This thing is UGLY, and profile 1.1 no less.
Peetah @ Mar 3rd 2008 1:05PM
I'll either buy a Samsung or an Oppo (if announced), but I'd like to get something with 2.0 support.
TrikinCurt @ Mar 3rd 2008 1:41PM
Anyone know if it internally decodes the lossless formats?
anseK @ Mar 3rd 2008 1:55PM
If will bitstream lossess but will not decode.
