NME says format war still on, it totally made out with a girl last summer in Niagara Falls
Just when the members of the Blu-ray Disc Association were settling down to enjoy the fruits of victory, another challenger has entered the ring -- oh wait, it's just NME, makers of VMD, so it's really more like "remained in the ring and basically ignored." The company just issued a press release saying "All indications are that VMD can fill the void left by HD DVD," and that "The way is now clear for VMD to be embraced by the industry." We suppose that's true -- the Asian bootlegging industry really hasn't weighed in with a format choice yet, has it? In any event, VMD players have apparently been shipping to the US for a month now, so all you HD DVD fans out there looking to back yet another losing horse can probably find one -- start at the shadiest retailer you can think of, and then move downwards.

I'd say that HD DVD still has a better chance of winning the format war than these guys.
Raptor007 @ Feb 29th 2008 6:59PM
Blu-ray most certainly isn't a perfect format, and I think either HD-DVD or VMD would have been a better victor for the consumers. But come on VMD, it's too late now!
The only way to unseat Blu-ray is to develop an ultra-HD format (higher resolution than 1080p) and have it ready-to-go by the time ultra-HD TVs enter the mass market. It's still a few years off, but it's going to happen.

Sorry, but Ultra HD is not going to have a chance of success in the U.S. until we go through yet another broadcast TV transition. Can you imagine the government trying to convince everyone to do that again, any less than 20 years from now?
Not to mention that at around 9' from the TV, you'd have to have a 70" TV to even resolve the full detail of 1080p. It's going to be a generation before we have enough people with big enough TVs to make Ultra HD feasible.

I was looking at the titles available for it, and it has some surprisingly good movies available. It's not going to unseat Blu-ray, but it isn't entirely dead and if NME can keep plugging away at it for a year or two, it could actually fill the void left by HD DVD--a format that does disc-based 1080p movies on the cheap.

HD is not for the cheap, please go back in your homes and enjoy your SD.
Thank you.
Prey521 @ Feb 29th 2008 7:34PM
HD is not for the cheap? Says who?
borland502 (SDF - Macross Ring) @ Feb 29th 2008 8:23PM
A more sensible option would be to say that "early adoption isn't for the cheap." Because you can bet your blue-violet lasers that neither Toshiba nor Sony got into this game to cater to the elite. Sorry Indie music lovers...this band wants to go platinum.

Wow. Well considering I got my (6) HD DVD movies and player for 100, it works out for me at almost exactly the same price as if I'd paid for a new DVD player and the 6 movies I have on standard DVD. I paid almost nothing more for getting it in HD and all the extra features.
And an HDTV to play it on? In factory outlets in the UK you could pick up a 26" 1080i for 350.
Its not -that- expensive, sure, a little bit more pricey now its only blu-ray which costs considerably more. But Its all going to fall in price anyway.
I don't what prices you've been looking at, but last time I checked for a new display standard and a new format I'd say its actually pretty cheap.
DrXym @ Mar 2nd 2008 6:03AM
It's not for the cheap right now. Players are teetering on mainstream prices but they're not there yet. And the disk selection is too small, and cost too much. Blu Ray is likely tip over into mainstream by the end this year.

Oh for the Love of god! WHY???!!!! This is like a kid throwing rocks at a tank. Good luck VMD, you're going to need it, ALOT!
HD4ME @ Feb 29th 2008 7:59PM
"so all you HD DVD fans out there looking to back yet another losing horse can probably find one".............................what sort of insensitive, insulting comment is that, what a wanker!
JimC @ Feb 29th 2008 9:23PM
Ahhhh....there, there, don't you get all worked up. We all know that the big bad Sony pistol whipped everyone into submission and the better format was just a victim of anti-consumer conspiracy....hehe....
Raptor007 @ Mar 3rd 2008 5:11PM
If by "pistol whipped" you mean "paid off", then yes, that's exactly what happened.
ccweems @ Feb 29th 2008 8:02PM
Everybody knows what VD is but what is VMD? Venereal Mental Disease?
Leroy Vargas @ Feb 29th 2008 11:51PM
I don't know, but I am pretty sure of something: N-M-E stands for En-em-y. So NME is now our new enemy in the HD format war. (Actually, VMD stands for Versatile Multilayer Disc.)
VMD is like the Mike Gravel or Ron Paul of the HD race. Everybody cared about Blu-ray and HD-DVD, just like Democrats are caring about Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama and Republicans are caring about John McCain and Mike Huckabee, but only very few are caring about VMD (perhaps because it still uses a red-laser diode?) in the same way that Gravel and Paul are largely being ignored (perhaps because of Gravel's stance in favor of weed or Paul's stance against the SAFE act?)

It's NIAGARA Falls. Please spell the name of my home city correctly, thank you. :)

Thank you :D

So maybe you actually DID kiss that Canadian girl in Niagara Falls.
Shane @ Feb 29th 2008 10:11PM
Not sure as to why another company is trying to get into this race. It's like a one legged man in a butt kicking contest.
Felix @ Mar 1st 2008 7:32AM
as a BD fan, I'd rather get HD DVD than HD-VMD. HD DVD uses blue laser, while this VMD uses red. newer technology is more expandable than old tech (red laser)
i know the bitrate is higher than HD DVD, but lower than BD.
I don't know why they even bother making such a thing. maybe they are aiming to replace VCD in Asian countries (VCD is still popular there - and cheaper than DVD)

I like nilay's writing style... no "writerspeak", it flows like someone is speaking casually.
Kevin-Mahalo @ Mar 2nd 2008 1:20AM
I am now going to support these fellas! Poor reliable and useful HD DVD is sadly gone for bad! Now I am for HD VMD, thats right High Def - Versatile Media Disc! :)!
DrXym @ Mar 2nd 2008 6:01AM
The Asian bootlegging community will go with BD9 (or 4.7Gb single layer), AVCHD or just burn H264 files straight to disk. After all, 4-5Gb will yield a watchable HD movie. Not great but certainly better than SD or DVD. It means they can burn DVDs just like now but support HD.
VMD is just being ignored and stands zero chance of making any traction at all. Anywhere.
