DirecTV subscribers, that tingling feeling is Liberty Media completing
its swap of News Corp. shares for a piece of your satellite TV provider, three regional sports networks and
$550 $465 million in cash. After approval from the FCC came through last week all that is left is the
still-pending approval of the Justice Department that no anti-trust rules have been broken, but otherwise the deal is done. The only real downside to report is that anyone outside the 150 largest TV markets in the U.S. shouldn't expect local TV service via satellite, cuz DirecTV has no plans to provide it. Take heart though, as the space should enable it to squeeze another national HD broadcast or ten in there, feeling better yet?
Update: The Justice Department has
signed off on the transaction (thanks HdNutcase!) so nothing stands in the way of Liberty Media's world domination...and by world domination we mean partial ownership of DirecTV.

And in fact the transaction was completed Wednesday, with Murdoch and his group resigning from the DirecTV board, and being replaced by the newly-elected Chairman, John Malone.

Murdoch accomplished his goal at DirecTV; the company now exclusively uses News Corp's software platform to deliver its TV services, and that is unlikely to change anytime soon.

DirecTV has used News Corp. owned NDS for software since they installed their first receiver. I doubt News Corp had to buy part of DirecTV to secure that deal.

Do we get TiVo back now that Newcorp's out of the picture? Wasn't the only reason for the crappy DVR because they wanted to get their own sister companies boxes pushed onto the public?

I hope so, but doubt it.... :(

It really is time for directtv and tivo to kiss and make up. I'm a long time directtv/tivo customer and I WANT HD!
Listen up directtv, I'm very, very close to switching to comcast so that I can get a HD Tivo solution. This would be a great opportunity to pre-announce that Tivo is coming back to directtv. Don't make me leave.
